AC DC
DC Motor
Dc motor used in evs have three main parts:-
• Rotor
• Stator
• Commutator
DC motor contains rotor
which can contain
permanent magnets but
electromagnet is preferred
to gain more torque.
Stator windings produce
constant magnetic field in
which rotor moves due to
interaction of magnetic flux.
Commutator does the
switching of direction of
current flow therefore
producing unidirectional
torque.
Ac motor is dc motor with no commutator.
Both stator and rotor windings have windings.
The rotating magnetic field of stator induces current in rotor thus creating turning
force.
Speed is varied by varying the frequency of ac supply.

It is the motor controller
Motor controller
The electric vehicle controller is the electronics package that
operates between the batteries and the motor to control the
electric vehicle‘s speed and acceleration .

• Controls the dc motor by varying voltage level [PWM signals]

control

• Brings back a fraction of power supplied to motor and charges

Regenerative braking is an energy recovery mechanism that slows down a
moving vehicle or object by converting its kinetic energy into a form that can
be either used immediately or stored until needed.
The energy which otherwise would have been wasted in the form of heat is
harvested by the same electric motor which drives the car.
Use of regenerative braking in F1
The KERS(kinetic energy
recovery system) used in F1
cars is enacted by MGU-K
(motor generator unit
kinetic).
It harnesses the energy from
the common shaft connecting
the engine and wheels during
the process of braking.
The extra energy can be
employed through the
electric motor which assists
the main V6 engine during
it’s run.
Up to 120 kW or 160 bhp of
power can be provided.
