The United States conducted at least $1 billion in two-way trade with 94 countries
in 2017, more than one-third of the world’s nations.
It conducted at least $10 billion with the top 45, $50 billion with the top 17, more
than $100 billion with the top seven, and $500 billion with the top three.
‘What follows is a look at the nation's top 10 trade partners in 2017, with links to
more detailed information. All the information is based on annual U.S. Census
Bureau, as analyzed by the WorldCity, the company where I serve as president.
1. China, There was a time when it appeared Canada would always be the
United States' top trade partner. Now it appears it might never be No. 1
again, as U.S. trade with China continues to climb while oil prices —
Canada has long been the No. 1 source of U.S. foreign oil — remain well

below previous highs while inching up. In 2017, China became only the
second nation to top $600 billion in trade with the United States; Canada
having previously done it before oil prices declined. Almost two-thirds of
all trade with China is seaborne trade, with another third via air. The U.S.
trade deficit with China set a record in 2017, the 17th record in the last 20
years.
2, Canada. U.S.-Canada trade rose a healthy 7.06 percent in 2017, and it
accounted for 15% of all U.S, trade. More than one-half of all U.S.-Canada
trade occurs at just three border crossings: Detroit's Ambassador Bridge,
the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron, Mich., and the Peace Bridge in
Buffalo, N.Y.
3. Mexico. The third key U.S. trade partner is Mexico. With China and
Canada, the three accounted for 45% of all U.S. trade with the world in
2017. Just two border crossings, in Port Laredo and El Paso, Texas,
accounted for 48% of all U.S.-Mexico trade in 2017.

4. Japan. After the Big Three — China, Canada and Mexico — comes a second
tier of U.S. trade partners, led by Japan. The top three each accounted for
more than $500 billion in two-way trade. Japan-U.S, trade, meanwhile,
topped $200 billion in 2017, up 4.9 percent. Because motor vehicles
account for one-third of the value of all Japanese imports to the United
States, and 70% of all trade is water-borne, most of the leading gateways
for this trade are West Coast seaports, led by the Port of Los Angeles.
5. Germany. The top-ranked European trade partner, Germany is the second
of four countries that comprise the secord tier of top 10 U.S. trade
partners, those with more than $100 billion in two-way trade with the
United States. Germany's top gateway for trade is the Port of Charleston,
S.C., an example of how an economic-development decision can directly

affect trade flows. Germany automaker BMW builds vehicles in South
Carolina, one of the early foreign manufacturers to do so, and an
ecosystem — parts, tires, support services — consequently followed.

South Korea. What sets South Korea apart as a top trade partner is that
two of the top three and three of the top five gateways for its U.S, trade are
airports. That distinction would seem to point to the type of trade occuring
between the United States and South Korea when compared to the other
two Asian trade partners ahead of it, China and Japan. To an extent, that is
true: South Korea's imports tend to be lighter and of higher value.
Nevertheless, 64% of all U.S.-South Korea trade is water-borne, equal to
that of China's U.S. trade and below Japan's, at 70%. Those leading
airports are San Francisco International, Dallas-Fort Worth International
and Chicago's O'Hare International — two of the three in the country's
mid-section, for easier access to supply chains and ultimate markets.
7. United Kingdom. The United Kingdom was the only top 10 trade partner
to see its U.S. trade decline in 2017, though that decline was slight, at 0.29
percent. It is the last top 10 partner with at least $100 billion in two-way
trade with the United States.
8. France. France is the third of four European nations in the United States’
top 10 trade partners and the top of the third tier of U.S. trade partners:
those with less than $100 million in trade but more than $50 million. Its
U.S. trade increased 6.13% in 2017. Six of the top 10 gateways for France's
trade with the United States are airports, including Cincinnati-Northern
Kentucky International Airport.
9. India. The fourth of four Asian trade partners in the nation's top 10, India
is also one of the nation’s fastest-growing trade partners over the last
decade. Unlike the manufacturing powerhouses China, Japan and South
Korea, India is a large trader in diamonds, pharmaceuticals and gold.
Consequently, its percentage of trade that travels by air is larger than the
other three at 43%.

10. Italy, Italy slipped ahead of Taiwan to re-enter the United States’ list of top
10 trade partners in 2017, its trade increasing 10.2% in 2017. Its leading
gateway for U.S. trade is the Port of Newark, N.J., and its trade is
increasingly being defined by pharmaceuticals and plasma, vaccines and
blood fractions.

for U.S. trade. Still to come are columns on the top 10 U.S. exports and the top 10
