Nowadays, there is an increasing need for efficient public transport and there is a lot of controversy

about where governments should invest more. On the one hand, some say it is best to invest in new
infrastructure for high speed trains between cities, whereas others stress the importance of improving
the existing public transport..

Cities around the world are growing at a fast pace, thus more and more people are looking for ways to
travel between them cheaply, quikly and reliable. The only option to fulfill this increasing demand are
high speed trains. These can transport people over long distances in relatively the same time as
airplanes do, but at a much lower cost for passengers. Therefore, investing in this is the better option in
the long run, although it can prove to be expensive at first for the government.

The cheaper alternative, the improvement of the already existing public transport, means there will be a
much lower stress on the government’s budget. In consequence, education, housing, reducing crime
rate and pollution are other areas that can benefit from this, as more money will be available for them.
However, citizens will not have any option to travel between cities in a very fast and cheap way.
Therefore, they will have to rely on airplanes, which are quite expensive, especially in urgent situations,
when without a two months prior booking prices are extremly high. Furthermore, airplanes often fail to
cover different areas of a country, so in some cases people might not have any fast travel solution.

In conclusion, I believe that although a short-term stress on the public budget can result from such a big
investment, very fast trains are the better option in the long run, as traditional transport will fail to fill
the needs of the ever-increasing cities.
