Course Objectives:

1. To continue to gain a facility with the concepts and techniques of differential and integral calculus.
2. To continue to build a strong foundation in calculus as preparation for subsequent courses in mathematics and engineering.
3. To continue to nurture students' ability in analytic thinking and problem-solving.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this course, the successful student will be able to:

1. Develop analytical and numerical expressions using real problems.

2. Apply appropriate mathematics principles to evaluate expressions, and find and test potential solutions.
3. Understand problem statements and identify objectives.
4. Apply engineering mathematics and computations to solve mathematical models.

Course Text:

Calculus, Early Transcendentals, Hybrid Edition, (7th ed.), by James Stewart (Thomson, 2012).
E-textbook of the complete 7th edition is in the WebAssign coming with the Hybrid Edition.

WebAssign is an online platform that contains online support for this textbook, including many useful resources. A few OPTIONAL
online assignments will be scheduled using this platform. The use of WebAssign is NOT mandatory for this course. Detailed instructions
for WebAssign will be posted in BlackBoard.

1. Note : Hard-covered textbook : Calculus, Early Transcendentals (7th ed.), by James Stewart (Thomson, 2012) is fully compatible if you
don’t intend to use WebAssign. Previous editions are not compatible.

Teaching Mode: Four hours of Lecture and a one hour Lab per week.

Evaluation:
• 30% Test 1, 90 minutes (Rooms TBA), 4 pm, Friday January 30th, 2015.
• 30% Test 2, 90 minutes (Rooms TBA), 4 pm, Friday March 13th, 2015.
• 30% Final Exam, 90 minutes, during EXAM WEEK (the final exam will NOT be cumulative).
• 10% Quizzes and/or online assignments in WebAssign (more details about this will be posted in a separate Blackboard
Announcement).

Note: the use of calculators is not permitted during evaluations (quizzes, tests, and final exam)

Evaluation Guideline

1. The quizzes, tests and exam will be closed-book and written without calculators or any other aids.

2. There will be no supplemental exam.

3. Grades will be assigned as indicated in the Ryerson 2014/15 Calendar.

4. Each student is responsible, a priori, for all the formulas on pp. 1-2 (next to the front cover of Stewart’s book).

5. Any tests written in pencil or erasable pen may be ineligible for remarking.

6. There is no intrinsic reason for giving a non-zero mark for an incorrect solution. Part marks (if any) are awarded entirely at the
examiner’s discretion. If a test is submitted for re-marking, the whole test may be re-marked. The result may possibly be that the
student receives a lower mark on any or all questions.

7. Students must read and comply with the Statement on Academic Ethics and the Senate Resolution on Academic Dishonesty as found in
the Senate Policy Statements distributed at registration and available in the Department Office (Calendar 2014/15). Check also
http://www.ryerson.ca/acadcouncil/current/pol60.pdf. Talking to another student, glancing over another student’s paper or being caught
with non-allowed materials during an evaluation may result in a zero mark for that evaluation and a record of academic misconduct
lodged with the Registrar’s office.

8. During an evaluation sharing of pencils, pens or erasers is NOT PERMITTED and PDAs, phones and pagers must be turned off and
out of reach.

9. During any evaluation, coats jackets and bags must be placed out of reach.

10. Regrading and recalculation MUST be requested according to Policy 134 (http://www.ryerson.ca/senate/policies/pol134.pdf)

Missed Lab Quizzes, Tests or Final Exam

1. Students who cannot be present for a quiz, a test or the final exam because of illness must contact the First Year Common Engineering
Office (416-979-5000 ext 4261, ENG377) prior to the time of the evaluation or within the time period stated in Policy 134. Also, the
student must contact the professor in three days to inform the professor about missing the test and going to present his/her medical
certificate to FYCEO in three days.They must also submit a Ryerson-approved medical form filled out by their doctor stating, among
other things, that they were too ill to attend school on the day of the evaluation and giving the expected duration of their illness (blank
forms can be obtained from the Department of Mathematics office or from other academic departments, or from the web at
http://www.ryerson.ca/rr/forms.htm ). Besides illness, only very serious reasons, properly documented, can be considered as valid excuses
for missing an evaluation. For more information on this consult the Calendar or www.ryerson.ca/senate/policies/ (see Policies 134 and
150).
2. If a test is missed for a valid reason as described above, there will be a make- up test soon after the test (Date, Room and Time TBA).
PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO ADDITIONAL MAKE-UP TESTS. Make-ups should cover the same material as the
original assessment but need not be of an identical format.

Make-up of final exams: Students who miss a final exam for a verifiable reason and who cannot be given a make-up exam prior to the
submission of final course grades, mainly in three days after the final exam, must be given a grade of INC (as outlined in the Grading
Promotion and Academic Standing Policy) and a make-up exam (normally within 2 weeks of the beginning of the next semester) that
carries the same weight and measures the same knowledge, must be scheduled.

3. If proper documentation is not received within reasonable time, the mark for the missed evaluation will be zero.

Lab Procedure / Regulations

1. No labs are scheduled during the first week of classes.

2. Labs meet once a week, starting on Monday January 12th, 2014.

3. Each student must attend the lab section indicated in his/her individual timetable. Do not attend a different lab section. Your name will
not appear on the class list. Please check your schedule carefully to be certain that you are going to the correct lab section.

4. Unless indicated otherwise, there will be a quiz during each weekly lab, except the weeks in which a mid-term is scheduled and the last
week of the course.

5. Students who cannot be present for a quiz because of illness should follow the same procedure as for a missed test, outlined above. If a
quiz is missed with a valid reason, then the student’s quiz mark will be averaged over the remaining quizzes. If proper documentation is
not received within three days, the mark for the missed quiz will be zero.

Student e-mail policy

Ryerson’s email policy http://www.ryerson.ca/senate/policies/pol157.pdf clearly states that Ryerson email accounts are to be used for
communication with students. All students have access to Ryerson email through their my.ryerson.ca site, and this is the official way in
which they receive communication. This is the e-mail address that the professor will use to communicate with students and the professor
may not (or will not) respond to any other address.
