WEATHER STORY
[ANCHOR INTRO]
WINTER IS A HARD TIME FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE.
BAD ROADS, SLUSHY SIDEWALKS, AND ICY WINDSHIELDS ARE JUST SOME OF
THE MINOR INCONVENIENCES THAT CAN AFFECT SOMEONE IN THE COLD
MONTHS.
FOR SOME PEOPLE…THOUGH…WEATHER IS ONLY THE START OF THEIR
PROBLEMS WHEN IT STARTS TO GET COLD OUT.
[VO] RYAN BONNAU SAT DOWN WITH US TO TELL US ABOUT HIS STRUGGLE
WITH ONE OF THE WINTER’S LEADING PROBLEMS.
[SOUNDBITE] I’ve had Seasonal Affective Disorder for as long as I can remember. It wasn’t
diagnosed until I was a teenager, but I’ve always been depressed when it started getting colder.
[VO] SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER…SOMETIMES CALLED SEASONAL
DEPRESSION…AFFECTS OVER 10 MILLION AMERICANS EVERY YEAR.
[SOUNDBITE] I mean, I’m sure it’s different for everyone, but for me personally it comes with
a lot of lack of motivation and a lot of anxiety, which are super hard to deal with on their own, so
having them together is an even worse feeling.
[VO] DOCTORS ATTRIBUTE S.A.D TO THE LACK OF SUNSHINE…SINCE GETTING
NATURAL VITAMIN D MAKES THE BODY PRODUCE MORE SERATONIN…THE
CHEMICAL IN THE BRAIN THAT MAKES US HAPPY.
[VO] WHILE THE NUMBER OF AMERICANS DIAGNOSED WITH S.A.D IS HIGH…THE
NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO EXPERIENCE THE SYMPTOMS OF IT IS BETWEEN
THIRTY-THREE AND SIXTY-FIVE MILLION.
[VO] MACKENZIE MARSH TOLD US ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE.
[SOUNDBITE] I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I have Seasonal Affective Disorder, but I
definitely do experience more depressive episodes in the wintertime.
[VO] EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT REASONS FOR FEELING BLUE IN THE COLD
MONTHS…BUT MACKENZIE’S IS SIMPLE
[SOUNDBITE] I think it probably has to do with how cold and gross it is outside. I’ve always
been more of a warm and sunny kind of girl, so the winter just really bums me out.
[STANDUP] NO MATTER WHAT YOU CALL IT…SEASONAL AFFECTIVE
DISORDER…SEASONAL DEPRESSION…WINTERTIME BLUES…ITS NOT AS
UNCOMMON AS YOU MAY THINK.
THIS IS CAMERON REDBURN WITH WEMU…SIGNING OFF.
