Practical Research I

 Share research experiences and knowledge

 Explain the importance OF RESEARCH IN OUR DAILY LIFE
Nature of inquiry and Research
Inquiry - to look for information by asking various questions about the thing you are curious
Learning process that motivates you too obtain knowledge or information about people,
things places, or events
Research
 A process of scientific thinking which lead to discovery or establishment of new
knowledge and truth
 discover truths by investigating on your chosen topic scientifically
 Derived from a French word “cerchier” meaning to seek or search
 A process of scientific thinking which lead to discovery or establishment of new
knowledge and truth
 Discover new facts or new “truths”
 Find answer to a problem
 Improve existing method or techniques
Why do we need to conduct research?
 For more explanations, for verifiable truth, to make discoveries
 Preservation and improvement of the quality of human life
 Discover new facts or new “truths”
 Find answer to a problem
 Improve existing method or techniques

Purpose of Research
 Preservation and improvement of the quality of human life
 Discover new facts or new “truths”
 Find answer to a problem
 Improve existing method or techniques
 To work independently
 scientific/systematic, In depth knowledge
 developed(HOTS)
Purpose of Research (students)
Improve reading & writing skills
Familiarity to the basic tools and types of research in gathering data and presenting research
findings
To avoid spoon feeding
Characteristics of Research:
1. Accuracy-data/references
2. Objectiveness-facts/not opinion
3. Timeliness-fresh/new and interesting
4. Relevance-instrumental in society
5. Clarity-simple/direct/concise/correct language
6. Systematic-organized/ and orderly manner
Essential factors in research
Men, money, materials
Good research
Produce – processible result, specific result, generalizable result, interpretable result
Gathers new data, solve problems, develop theories, requires expertise, logical and objective,
carefully recorded and reported, with accurate observation and description
Difficulties encountered in research
1. Recognizing the problem
2. Duplication
3. Indifference of people to research
External factors
novelty, importance in the field, availability of data and method, institutional or administrative
cooperation
Personal factors
interest, training, cost, time etc
What are not research problem?
1. Self- enlightenment, personal problem
2. Comparing two sets of data
3. Answerable by yes or no
4. Ethical or moral question
5. Discover new facts or new “truths”
6. Find answer to a problem
7. Improve existing method or techniques

 Differentiate qualitative from quantitative research

Classify the following according to categories: quantity/ quality (quantifiable and not
quantifiable)
Behavior, attitude, color, height, texture, smell, appearance, weight, heart rate, speed,
culture, IQ, EQ, academic performance

qualitative

quantitative
Difference between qualitative and quantitative data

Treatment of data No statistical Treatment with statistical treatment

Qualitative research requires non-numerical data, which means that the research uses words
rather than numbers to express results, the inquiry or investigation about people’s thoughts,
beliefs, feelings, views, and lifestyle regarding the object of the study.
Quantitative research-involves measurement of data; presents findings referring to the
number of frequency of something in numerical forms (percentage, fractions, and numbers)
Classify the following samples of research as qualitative or quantitative:
1. Effects of absenteeism to academic performance
2. Termicidal effects of selected plants to C.formosus
3. Feasibility of selected plants as an effective water color
4. Feasibility of papaya extract as an alternative oil pastel
5. A case study of bullying and effects to the participation of students in class
6. Historical analysis of the culture of 7 tribes of Mangyan in Oriental Mindoro
