Birthdays will always hold a special place in my heart.

It never ceases to amaze me the lengths people

go to, to celebrate growing a year older. Because if it was your birthday, then it would be ‘your’ day.
People will treat you like you are the most special person on Earth and that for one day; all you need to
do is be happy. Of course, the other reason to love you birthday is because of the gifts. If you show up to
a birthday party without a present, the person who invited you, will in turn be disappointed. But not me.
I never really got any birthday presents when I was younger. Of course, I had presents, but not the ones
that are bought specifically for me and then wrapped up and put in a bow. My presents were waking up
in the morning to the scream of:’PRINCESS, IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY!’ by one of my brothers, receiving a
crushing hug from my Dad and a kiss from my Mom. I guess you could say that they were the best kinds
of gifts.

But one of the best birthdays I ever got was on my 12th birthday. I was running late to school and
when I finally got to class, all my friends were at music. I opened my desk to see… a card, a pencil, a
rubber and a notebook shaped like a shoe. It was probably the cheapest and easiest gift that someone
rushed to get but I never saw it like that. I was ecstatic. I practically celebrated right there on the spot!

Not because someone had given me a gift but because someone took the time and effort to find me
something to make me happy on my birthday. I still have the card. Because it will always be a reminder
to me that when you give someone a gift, it’s the effort that counts.
