Grade Level: 6th Grade Content: Mathematics Standard Addressed: MGSE6.EE.1 Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents. Amount of Time: One class period Technology Standard Addressed: 1 - Empowered Learner SMAR Level: Substitution Essential Question(s): What are whole-number exponents? How do I write numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents? How do I evaluate whole number exponents? Learning Activity ● Introduction: Students have prior knowledge of exponents from the previous instruction day. Teacher uses this assessment tool, Kahoott!, to gage student’s understanding of whole-number exponents. ● Instruction/Activities: Teacher will display Kahoot! game in front of the classroom. All students will enter the game pin into their device and enter their real name (fake/inappropriate names will not be allowed). Once everyone has entered the game, the teacher will start the game. The students have 30 seconds to answer each question. There are 10 questions. After the game is over, students will be instructed on their final product. ● Final Product: As a final product, students will create their own Kahoot! game consisting of 5 questions about whole-number exponents with the correct answers selected. They will have the rest of the class time to complete this 5 question Kahoot! game. Once completed, they will email their game link to the teacher. ● Evaluation or deliverable: Participation in the Kahoot! game during class time will be taken as a participation grade. As an evaluation, Kahoot! provides a data report after the game is played. This allows the teacher to visually see what her students are understanding or struggling with. To evaluate students’ created questions and answers, they will submit their Kahoot! link for me to evaluate. Reflective Practice To enhance student engagement with the content and their classmates, students will post their Kahoot! game links to a classroom discussion board. This will allow students to access their peers’ games and play them. By creating their own Kahoot! games, they are already achieving Bloom’s Taxonomy Level 6 of “Create.” Technologically, students are achieving standard 3, “Knowledge Constructor.” These game links can be published to share with others outside of the classroom on the classroom website.
