You spend so much time in your living room, why
not spruce it up with a couple of projects that
will truly make it your own? Consider these home
DIY projects if you’re looking to save money and
make big differences in your living space.
Build your own rustic mirror frame
One of the best ways to make your home look
more unique is to create interesting mirror
frames. Pick one or two and add a new design
element to it. An easy way to add to a circular
mirror’s look is to make a sunburst frame around
it using wood shims and some glue.
If the mirror has an octagonal shape, build a
simple wooden frame around it to give it some
personality. This can be accomplished using
repurposed wood. Saw the pieces to fit the shape
of the mirror, then carve a groove on each piece
so the glass can slip inside. Finally, piece it all
together with some wood glue and a pin nailer.
Add a frame to your TV
It’s not just mirrors that are great for framing. You
can also frame your TV. A lot of people wouldn’t
think of this, but it will add an extra element to
your entertainment area. If your home maintains
a mostly rustic look, you can leave the wood
unpainted, but usually, it’s best to paint the frame
to match the rest of the room. A prominent
frame around your TV also helps to distract
from any wires that might get in the way of your
viewing experience.

back of an old small mirror or art frame and
attach it to the wall. Use these small shelves to
show off some unique decor or to showcase a
special collection of books.
Build a DIY end table
Want a unique end table? One clever option is to
cut a table you don’t use anymore in half, paint it
a new color and attach it to the living room wall.
This two-legged end table will look great next to
your living room couch.
Switch up the window treatments
In the warmer months, heavy drapes and curtains
can help you save money on your energy bill.
They block sunlight, which keeps the room cool
and the need for air conditioning down. In the
colder months, they keep out cold air, slightly
reducing your heating bill – but they still block
out sunlight.
Natural daylight can transform a room from drab
to lively. To make a space more inviting, but still
protect from cold air seeping in, opt for window
treatments made from medium-weight fabrics
such as canvas or cotton. Dress up your living
room windows with Roman shades or sheer
cotton curtains, which provide some protection
while still letting the sun’s rays warm the room
(literally and figuratively).
Add reflective surfaces

However, a full remodel can cost upward of
$10,000, which may not be in your budget.
Fortunately, if you’re working with a more limited
budget there are some low-cost, DIY bathroom
updates that can make a huge difference. Read on
for five simple projects that will take your bathroom
from lackluster to luxurious.
Upgrade your hardware
Are your sink and bath sporting ugly, outdated
fixtures? Upgrading the hardware and
accessories in your bathroom is a relatively
inexpensive way to instantly bring a more
luxurious feel to the space. Look for quality,
durable finishes like brushed nickel instead of
chrome. Replace the leaky faucet with a more
attractive, modern model. Trade that weak
shower head for a rain-style or hand-held fixture.
Then finish things off with matching towel bars
and toilet paper holder.
Revamp the vanity
There’s so much room for personalization and
creativity when it comes to the bathroom vanity
and sink. You can give your current cabinets
a facelift by repainting or restaining them or

replacing the countertops. Installing new laminate
or granite countertop is a simple way to upgrade
your surfaces without having to buy a new vanity.
However, if the current cabinets feel beyond repair
and you’re ready to start fresh, there are some
fun options for that, too. Consider repurposing
a piece of furniture like a dresser or shelving unit
as your new vanity and install an elegant vessel
sink or drop-in sink. Or if the bathroom feels
perpetually cramped, consider doing away with a

vanity altogether and installing a pedestal sink to
open up space.
Replace the mirror
The above-the-sink mirror is (for obvious reasons)
one of the main focal points of any bathroom.
But over the years the constant exposure to
moisture can leave bathroom mirrors damaged
and show unsightly black edges or spots.
Replacing the mirror is a great opportunity to
add more style (and maybe a little drama) to the
room. Look for a mirror that complements the
space well and has an interesting frame or shape,
such as oval or circular.
If you have double sinks in a vanity, placing a
separate mirror over each sink can be a great
alternative to one huge mirror. If you’re unable to
remove the existing mirror, or replacing it isn’t in
your budget, a clever hack is to install molding
around the mirror. Creating a “framed” mirror
instantly conveys a more polished look, and you’ll
have plenty of style options to play around with.
Install new lighting
Ready to bid farewell to those dreadful Hollywood
lights? Switching the lighting can completely
change the look and feel of a space. Besides
imparting a more modern look, updated lighting
can make a bathroom feel significantly larger.
Designers recommend using multiple layers of
light in the bathroom, both for ambience and
functionality, rather than relying on one central
source. You can create a layered effect through
combinations of recessed lighting, wall sconces,
pendants and even decorative chandeliers. And
you’ll have an endless variety of every style, shape,
and configuration to choose from. Many of these
changes can be made yourself, but for more
complicated installations it’s better to err on the
side of caution and call an electrician for help.
Renovate the walls
Repainting the walls is one of the simplest and
most cost-effective ways to change the feel
of any room, and this also holds true for the
bathroom. If your personal style is more creative,
you may want to spice up your spa space with
a bold color. But if you’re planning to sell your
home within the next few years, picking a neutral
color will be a better course of action. Trends
pass quickly and personal style is, well, personal!
Picking a neutral color will be more appealing
and less distracting to potential home buyers.
Another wonderful DIY hack is to install
inexpensive beadboard panels as wainscoting.
This is an instant way to bring more class and
sophistication to the space, and versatile
beadboard can be installed overtop multiple
surfaces (even wall tile). Finish the look by
installing some new trim. Fresh crown molding,
baseboards and chair rail can do wonders to
elevate the look of a space.

Attic Projects

You have dreaded cleaning your home’s attic dark and cold or too haunted! (Just kidding.)
for a long time. Maybe it’s too cluttered, too Whatever the reason, it stops today. Here’s how

to turn your attic into the room of your dreams –
or at least a great storage place.
Keep out the cold
Regardless of how you want your attic to look,
the most common complaint about attics is they
tend to be a bit cold. Addressing this problem
will help you achieve not just your dream attic,
but a lower heating bill for the rest of your house.
First, identify the cracks where cold air is seeping
in from the outside. Since they aren’t so easy to
spot, wait for a blustery day to head up to the
attic with a water bottle and a spray can of foam
sealant. Pour a little water on one hand, and
move your hand just over the surface of the walls
without touching them. The water will make your
hand more sensitive to the cold, helping you
detect the cracks, which you can then seal.
Keep in mind there are different kinds of sealants
that work best for different spots. There’s window
and door foam sealant, fire-blocking caulk or
spray foam for spots around pipes or wires, and
silicone sealant or furnace cement for spots
around flues or chimneys.
Clean up the clutter
What makes your attic cluttered? It’s a good idea
to take stock of everything that’s up there. Go
through everything, bit by bit, and write down
what you have. It may seem tedious, but once
you know what you have, it’ll be easier to know
what you can throw away, as well as easier to plan

out how everything will be organized.
If you want your attic to be a storage area, keep in
mind that despite sealing the cracks, the attic may
still have a different temperature than the rest of
the house and that will affect what you can safely
store up there. Certain items such as old photos,
electronic devices and sensitive items may not hold
up well under heat during the warmer months.
Build shelves up there
Vertical walls are hard to come by in attics, so
traditional shelving is not always an option. If you
have a lot of clothes in boxes that can be safely
stored in the attic, and you’re comfortable using
a drill, you can install clothing rods in between
the rafters.
With the clothes out of the way, consider building
shelves that slant with the slope of the roof. Build
L-shaped support brackets out of two-by-fours
and lay shelf board or planks of plywood on top.
Before you install the brackets, measure with a
chalk line or yardstick to make sure everything
lines up – then measure again.
More than a storage room
If you want to turn your attic into a cozy room for
reading, meditating or anything creative, there
are a few ways to go about it. Attics don’t always
have the best lighting, so place a few mirrors
around the room to help spread the existing
light. You could also arrange several battery-
powered lanterns around the attic to help it glow.
For another unique touch, hang tapestries on the
walls. It’s best to choose a pattern or color that
matches the room’s theme. Fasten it with some
handy-dandy Velcro tape. If your attic is low and
doesn’t allow much room to stand, the tapestries
will give your attic the feel of a tent. Your low-
slung attic can be a blessing in disguise – pick up
some stick-on glow-in-the-dark stars and arrange

them on the ceiling. Purchase some battery-
powered flickering candles, bring up some
sleeping bags, and invite your friends over for a
“camping” party. Declutter and redesign your
attic using these tips and it’ll soon turn into your
favorite spot in the house!

Though it may seem like having a green thumb
is a superpower, planning a garden takes work
and knowledge. Growing and eating your own
vegetables is especially rewarding but you have
to keep certain factors in mind, like how much
sun an area gets, what the soil is like and how the
plants react with the climate in your area before
you can see any success. With all that said, here
are some tips for planning a garden. Good luck
and may homegrown salads be in your future!
Cultivate a plan
First of all, what kind of space do you have to plant
a garden? Do you have a large patch of backyard?
Maybe it’s a small space on your rooftop or
something even simpler such as planters or pots.
No matter what, it’s best to start small if you’re a
beginner so you’re not overwhelmed with taking
care of too many plants.
Your garden should be cleared of weeds, rocks,
roots and debris before planting. Stay away from
trees because their shade and roots can take
sunlight and nutrients away from your garden.

Garden pests be gone
Beneficial insects are a great asset for protecting
your garden. These are predator insects who
are not interested in eating your plants, but the
bugs who make your plants home. Do your best
to find out what kind of garden pest is causing
the issue, and then choose predators that prey
on that bug.
For instance, the Trichogramma wasp is a good
choice to reduce the number of caterpillars in
your garden. This species prevents the caterpillar
from emerging early in the growing season, so
it’s a good preventative measure. Ladybugs are
great for getting rid of aphids and whiteflies
while praying mantises eat most garden pests.
You can plant flowers that attract these beneficial
species, but for fast results, it’s usually better to
purchase the insects and release them yourself.
And remember – spiders are your friend!
Although we might think to kill a spider the
moment we see one in the house, these
arachnids are actually a great form of free garden
pest control. Their webs trap a lot of flying pests
like flies, and having them in your garden is
always a good thing. So, next time you see a
spider in the house, put it in your garden instead
of swatting it!
Use diatomaceous earth

Spread a light layer of this garden store product
around the edge of your garden beds; this
substance will actually damage insects and slugs
and reduce the pest population. It doesn’t work
in the same way that a chemical does to keep out
pests, so the bugs can’t become immune to it.
Keep it healthy and clean
Getting rid of sick or weak plants actually helps
to keep garden pests out. Also, be sure to do a
thorough job of removing weeds and spreading
clean mulch on the soil. Keep your garden tidy
and fresh and your pest problem will be less of an
issue. Remember, your best defense in avoiding
pest damage is maintaining strong and healthy
plants, so do your best to provide your plants
with the highest-quality nutrients and fertilizer.

Everyone wants the perfect lawn landscape, but
not everyone knows how to get there. While
maintaining freshly trimmed, healthy grass is
essential, the right landscaping and gardening
techniques will make your yard the talk of the
neighborhood. Whether you’re starting to give
your lawn a new look, or just want a refresher,
these projects will help make your yard look
clean, attractive and welcoming.
Back to basics
It’s important not to cut your lawn too short,
as this can actually provide an opportunity for
weeds to grow. Instead, keep your grass at a
healthy, manageable length. In addition, water
the lawn less frequently, as this encourages grass
growth over weed growth.
It’s actually a good idea to keep your grass a little
longer than you would expect; essentially, the
shade provided by the taller grass prevents lawn
weeds from sprouting and growing. Of course,
you don’t want to overdo it and keep your grass
high, but rather find a middle ground.
You can pull most annual weeds out by hand,
but perennials with deep and tough root systems
might necessitate a tool to dig them out. Be sure
to apply just the right amount of fertilizer to the
soil, typically in the spring and fall. These nutrients
will enable the grass to grow up healthy and
strong, but make sure not to apply too much.
Continue to mow your grass periodically

care of chickens, they’ll provide you with a
number of benefits: eggs, companionship, and
of course, pest control. Chickens do a great
job of eliminating annoying garden pests like
grasshoppers, flies and June bugs. But watch out
– chickens can also do damage to your veggies
and plants if you’re not careful, so be sure to
keep an eye on them and don’t give them free
rein of your whole garden.

and tend your flower beds, too. Your home
probably doesn’t need to be a botanical garden
to attract buyers, but tidying up the exterior flora

Create a rough sketch of your lawn
Before you start a landscape overhaul, one of the
most important things to do is create a rough
sketch of how you want it to look. Try to keep
the drawing to scale so you can have an early
idea of how the different elements of your lawn
and garden will work together. With this handy
blueprint, you can foresee any potential issues
before you start on your project.
Before you plant anything new, take care of all
your hardscaping, which means anything like a
walkway, patio, fencing or other additions you
want to add. To make sure your garden looks
good all year, choose a variety of plants that will
bloom at different times and lay out your yard
accordingly. Be sure to research how fast your
plants grow and you’ll be able to plan your lawn
maintenance better. If one plant or tree grows
too quickly or too big and overshadows others,
you’ll want to prune it accordingly.
Designing your own landscape
As long as you have the space, it’s usually a good
idea to border your yard with wide flower beds,

which will make the lawn look more luxurious
than a few patches of flowers here and there.
The border between grass and flower bed
doesn’t need to be the same across the entire
lawn, as this can look stiff and tiresome. Instead,
use an intuitive approach to decide how the fluid
shape of your flower bed will look depending on
the surrounding elements.
One essential element of any lawn landscape
is having focal points that limit the monotony
and help your garden look interesting and well-
composed. These can be anything from a small
unique ornamental tree to a well-positioned
statue or arch. But don’t overdo it. Having a
whole array of gnomes, animal sculptures,
sundials and other ornaments can distract from
the other elements of your yard.
Adding color to your lawn
Color is another area where you want to be very
careful. Some gardeners choose a random mix of
flowers to plant in their garden, but this doesn’t
always play out so well. Too much color without
a sense of harmony can look more chaotic than
beautiful. If you’re new to gardening, keep it simple
at first and try to go mostly with shades of one
color. Pretend you’re an artist restricting yourself
to a certain palette or color scheme. For instance,
having a few patches of pink, red and white tulips
can look elegant and pleasing, but adding orange
tiger lilies to the mix might not work.
Adding a shade garden
Grass won’t grow under trees, so be sure to

plan your lawn landscape accordingly. Instead
of leaving patches of dirt under that big maple,
you can create a walking path, or arrange large
rocks to make the area look more interesting.
Creating a shade garden underneath your large
trees is another great choice. Seed some plants
that require little sunlight, and watch them thrive
around your trees. Your best choices for a shade
garden are shallow-rooted plants that won’t
compete with the tree’s roots, such as sedum and
plantain lilies.
DIY tree care
Once they are well-established, trees require
more of a watchful eye than actual care. Inspect
your trees for signs of decay or damage, such
as branches that are dead or crossing. Keep an
eye out for softwood, cracks or holes, patches
of dead bark or a tree that is leaning or growing
oddly, too. Place mulch over the root area of
the tree for protection, but leave open ground
around the base to help it breathe and absorb
nutrients easier.
Prune trees annually; late winter is ideal. Late
winter is also a good time to trim many shrubs,
though check pruning recommendations for your
specific variety. It is not recommended to remove
more than 25 percent of a tree and no more than
50 percent of a shrub in a single growing season.
Homeowners should only prune branches of trees
and shrubs that they can reach while standing on
the ground. For heavier branches that could cause
the bark to peel when they drop, place two partial
cuts going opposite directions first and then make
the final cut closest to the trunk, just above the
branch collar – the ring of bumpy tissue where the
branch meets the trunk.

properties. Here are a few ways to make your
home look more attractive, for potential buyers
or your own peace of mind.
Wash the walls and windows
This task may seem daunting, but it doesn’t
have to be. Choose a warm, dry day with little
to no wind for the job. Next, make sure all
windows and doors are closed tight. Seal doors
and windows with plastic or duct tape if you’re
worried about leakage.
Place duct tape and plastic sheeting over vents,
electrical outlets and outdoor light fixtures.
Cover plants and shrubs. Clear away any lawn
furniture that may be close to the house. Also,
make sure to keep children and pets inside.
Some of the most common stains are caused
by mildew. These can be removed with a mix of
oxygen bleach and dishwashing liquid. For each
gallon of water, use 1/4-pound oxygen bleach
powder and 1/8-cup dishwashing liquid. Use a
scrub brush and wear a mask to avoid inhaling
mildew spores. As when handling any kind of
bleach, wear rubber gloves. A slew of mildew
and mold removers are available at most home
hardware stores.
Siding cleaning kits can also be purchased. Many
come with nozzle attachments for your garden
hose. Use a scrub brush to remove any excess
dirt or grime from siding and pretreat any trouble
spots with cleaner. Aim the hose at a 45-degree
downward angle and apply cleaner from the
bottom to the top of siding to avoid streaking.
Then, rinse from top to bottom. Clean one
section at a time.
Test the washer out on a small section first. Move
the wand in a steady, sweeping motion. Stand

about 10 feet away and slowly come in closer as
you gauge the cleaning force of the washer. Do
not use the wand closer than two feet away from
the surface.
And don’t neglect your windows, either. Carefully
clean the inside and outside of each pane. Most
generic window cleaners will work wonders with the
right amount of determination and elbow grease.
Check the condition of the roof
The lifespans of roofs vary, as does the cost
to replace them, but it’s usually an expensive
project. If your roof is in rough shape with
missing, warped or faded shingles, consider
starting with cleaning and small repairs. Even true
do-it-yourselfers might benefit from calling in the
pros to help with this kind of work. While you’re
up checking out your roof, be sure to remove any
cobwebs from eaves and clear downspouts.
Paint it picture perfect
Fresh paint does wonders, but you need to
think about what color you choose. While you

the structural integrity of the home and they are
more energy efficient. Plus, they never warp or rot.
Minor kitchen remodel: $20,830
You knew it had to be on here somewhere! Yes,
sometimes old adages prove true and when it
comes to ideas for home improvement projects,
a kitchen remodel is still a good play. The good
news? You don’t have to go overboard (like that
$20,000 price tag suggests!) The new owner will
likely have a vision for his or her dream kitchen
a couple of years down the line – your job is to
make it nice enough that it doesn’t scare the
buyer away. To save money, the study suggests
leaving the cabinets in place and replacing just
the doors, drawers and hardware. Replace the
oven and refrigerator with more energy efficient
models. Install a modestly price sink and faucet
and new resilient flooring like linoleum or vinyl
tile, if your budget allows.
Manufactured stone veneer $7,851
You know these homes – the ones with stone
accents out front that give off a bit of frippery
but look really nice. Well, the study found adding
manufactured stone veneer – not actual stone,
for the record – is one of the most cost-effective
ideas for home improvement projects. They cut
300 feet of vinyl siding from the bottom third
of the home and garage and around the front
entryway and replaced it with artificial stone. Just
know that like most other sidings, artificial stone
can fade over time.
Garage door replacement $1,749
Like roofs, garage doors have a lifespan. The
study suggests replacing the existing garage
door with a new sectional garage door is one
of the best home improvements for the price.
However, it does mention that they evaluated
the cost of an insulated, single-layer steel garage
door and recommends reusing the motorized
door opener. So, don’t go overboard.

Siding replacement: $14,518
Siding can rot, crack, warp and get loose.
Its color can also simply become outdated.
Fortunately, having siding and trim replaced can
be well worth the money, according to the study.

recycled wood fibers and plastic have grown in
popularity in recent years, the study shows a deck
built from pressure-treated wood has more value
for someone who plans to sell his or her home in
the near future. Wood decks give off a relaxing
vibe and they can still last as long as 50 years.
The study looked at the cost of building a 16-by-
20-foot deck.
Two-story addition $176,108
Woah now. This is a pricey project, but can
definitely add a whole lot of value to your home.
The study looked at the cost to add a two-story
addition with a family room on the first floor and a
bedroom with a full bathroom on the second floor.
Electrical wiring and heating, ventilation and air
conditioning were also considered in the cost.
Basement remodel $71,115
Yes! Finally, your excuse to finish the basement
is here. But seriously, a basement remodel is
one of the top 10 popular home improvements
to recoup the most money on. Add in a full
bathroom and – you guessed it – a bar for the
best results.

Thanks to video-sharing websites like YouTube,
it takes less than 10 minutes for a homeowner to
learn how to replace a toilet, install a window or
build a secret passageway behind the bookcase
in the study.
If only it were that easy to hire a general
contractor to do the work.
It takes time to find the right fit for a major
home renovation project. But hiring a contractor
without thoroughly vetting him or her first is like
giving a complete stranger a wad of $100 bills
and hoping they come back with groceries.
You might think it would get awkward as you
pepper a prospective builder with questions
about his or her work history and safety practices,
but there are answers you deserve to know
before any money changes hands.
Hesitance or reluctance to answer your questions
is also a sign that you might be dealing with an
unscrupulous crew. Start with these questions
as you embark on your quest to find the right
contractor for your home renovation project.
What can you tell me about your company?
While internet reviews of a company can be
helpful, they could also be written by employees
or rival businesses. Give the company a fair
shake by meeting with the owner or project
manager. Ask for a few customer testimonials,
preferably something recent and another from a
few years back. Ask how long the company has
been in business and find out if the company is a
member of the area chamber of commerce.
Can I see your license?
Ask for proof that the contractor is licensed,
bonded and insured. If a contractor is unable to
produce these documents, do not hire him or

her, said Maureen Mailloux, an insurance agent
for AAA Northeast “It’s a risk you don’t want to
take,” she said.
The contractor should have both general liability
insurance, for damage to your home, and workers
compensation insurance, in case a worker gets
hurt on your property. If the contractor does
not have insurance, you could be held liable for
damage to the house or an injury to a worker. Your
homeowners insurance might pay the claim, but
that could result in higher rates or make it difficult
for you to get insurance in the future.
How much?
Obviously, price plays an important role in the
contractor you choose, but don’t let it be the
only factor, said Steffanie Finkiewicz, senior
public relations manager for Home Advisor, a
home improvement website. “What you want
is someone who can do quality work at a fair
price,” she said. Seek at least three bids and
ask each company to provide an itemized
list of expenses so you can see exactly how
your money will be spent. Confirm that the
list accounts for every aspect of the project,
including building permits and trash removal.
Homeowners can also use resources like
HomeAdvisor’s True Cost Guide to view the
average price of what other homeowners have
paid for similar projects in your area.
Can you give me a timeline?
Unexpected issues might come up, but an
experienced contractor should be able to give
you a timeline for the job. Ask for firm start
and end dates and make sure they account for
change orders and cleanup, too. If you decide
to hire the company, verify that the dates are
included in a formal legal document. You should
also establish how the contractor would contact
you – and vice versa – during the workday, after
hours and when you need to make a decision.
What permits are required?
In most states, building permits are required for
everything from demolishing a wall and changing
a window to replacing a roof and installing a
fence. A permit is essentially an agreement
that the builder will adhere to construction
codes. The contractor should offer to pull all the
necessary permits for the job, which will save you
time and the headache of answering complicated
questions from the building inspector. If a
contractor gives you a hard time about the
permits, consider someone else.
Who will be in my home?
Big projects take time, and during those days
or weeks, workers may be inside your home
when you are not. If the contractor is not the
foreman who will run the project, ask to meet
that person and make sure it’s someone you trust
in your home when you are not there. Ask what
an average work day is like and if they will have
other projects going on while working on yours.
It is not unreasonable to ask for a set schedule
of the hours they plan to work as well as regular
progress reports as the project moves along.

contractor should provide a detailed payment
plan (known as a draw schedule). The draw
schedule lists when payments will be due based
on when certain phases of the project have
been completed. Be leery of a contractor who
asks for a huge advance to begin the project.
For large jobs, contractors typically require
a down payment of 10 percent, according to
HomeAdvisor. Never pay more than 50 percent
up front. Never pay with cash, either. A check or
credit card is a much better option.
With these questions answered, you should
be able to make an informed decision about
the contractor you want to make your home
renovation project a beautiful reality. Of course,
before you sign anything, make sure everything
you agreed upon is in writing in the contract.
Above-ground versus in-ground
While above ground pools are much easier and
more convenient to install, you’ll miss out on the
deeper water and the more luxurious experience

help of a few friends, but an in-ground pool will

Make sure you know what the pool’s purpose is

a pool for fitness and want to swim long laps,
your setup is going to look much different than a
small pool intended for romantic evenings in the
water. Have the dimensions of your future pool
and deck written down to show your contractor,
so they can give you a reliable estimate.

architecture matches the style, shape and
