BENDING THEORY

Bending Deformation of a Straight Member:

Consider a beam member subjected to sagging by the application of
moments at each end.

Bending Deformation of a Straight Member:

Consider a rubber bar subjected to hogging by the application of moments
at each end.
BENDING THEORY

FLEXURE FORMULA:
Consider a cantilever beam subjected to sagging by the application of
moments at free end.
BENDING THEORY

FLEXURE FORMULA:
Assumptions:
 First, the longitudinal axis x, which lies within the neutral surface does
not experience any change in length
 Second, all cross sections of the beam remain plane and perpendicular
to the longitudinal axis during the deformation
 And third, any deformation of the cross section within its own plane will
be neglected.
In order to show how this distortion will strain the material, we will
isolate a small segment of the beam located a distance x along the beam’s
length and having an undeformed thickness Δ x.
