Digestion Process (Anaerobic Process of Decomposition)

Acideogenic Acetogenic
Hydrolysis Methanogens
Bacteria Bacteria

 Hydrolysis. Insoluble organic polymers (such as carbohydrates) are broken down making it accessible to
the acidogenic bacteria

 Acidogenesis. Converts sugars and amino acids into carbon dioxide, hydrogen, ammonia and organic acids

 Acetogenesis. Convert organics acids into acetic acid, hydrogen, ammonia, and carbon dioxide

 Methanogenesis. Convert organics acids into acetic acid, hydrogen and ammonia to methane and carbon
dioxide.
Added water volume

For optimal biogas production, water must usually be added to the waste, and other
feedstocks put into the digester. The owner or operator of the biogas plant should
know how much water they must add when they are putting material into the
digester. However, if this is not known or cannot be measured directly, the added
water volume can be assumed to equal the waste volume (most biogas plant manuals
recommend adding water to the waste in a ratio of 1:1).
