Taha: How old are you? How is your family? What are your skills? Are you from Tangier or
somewhere else?
Worker: Born and raised in Tangier and my family is doing great! I'm 27 years old
Worker: You dispatch workers depending on the model that comes in and then you monitor the
production.
Worker: I already have experience working with an old man in his shop and I know how to put
together a piece.
Worker: Every company hires around 50-60 interns where they put them on training chains and
when they're proficient enough they put them on the official chain for work. As an intern they
receive approximately 1000 dhs.
Worker: Companies here don't have a contract, it's cabling companies that provide contracts (5
months, 6 months and so on) unless you're high ranked in the company as a director of
something then they don't hire you with a contract here at textile companies.
Worker: No contract whatsoever but they pay for your social security and vacation.
Worker: We work for 9 hours some days but for 3 days a week we add an extra 2 hours. For
example we enter at 6:15am and get out at 3:45pm we have an hour for lunch and if it's one of
those days when we need to add an hour then we come out at 6:30pm. When Spain moves one
hour ahead as part of daylight saving we add an hour too and in that case we only work half day
on Fridays.
Amine: What about the weekends?
Taha: How many hours do you work a day? 9 hours? What if you work an extra hour. Do you get
paid the usual rate or an overtime rate?
Worker: A usual rate. We only get double the rate if we work on sundays.
Worker: In the summertime, the whole factory shuts down and we get paid for it about 2000-
3000 dhs depending on the person's salary.
Worker: They get paid from the social security about 10 000 dirhams that they receive upon
returning from labour.
Worker: It's not the employer that gets to decide, it's the physician.
Worker: People only join them if there's a company that's going for massive layoffs otherwise
very few people join them.
Worker: I have no idea. I have never been in a union and I don't get myself in those things.
Worker: Yeah we vote for one. But if he receives any bribes from the boss he'll be in big trouble
[gestures that he could get beaten up].
Taha: Of course you are free to decline to answer any question, but here it says how much do
you get paid monthly?
Worker: No problem at all. My salary without bonuses is 5000 dhs and with bonuses depending
on the production. I get paid by salary but workers get paid by hour starting from minimum
wage up to 16 dhs an hour.
Worker: Depending on when the client pays us. Our clients are always late. When the client pays
them on the 5th we get paid on the 7th and so on.
Taha: What are the demographics of your company?
Worker: When I have a difficult job I give it to experienced workers but when I have an easy one I
give it to an intern or someone who lacks experience. It's not logic that someone gets paid 17
dhs an hour and I'll give him a [breakpoint: textile term].
Worker: Zara and Celop but mostly Zara. We have a French client.
Taha: How do you see your company in terms of social relationships, cleaniness and safety
measures?
Worker: It used to be really good but currently it declined in quality because the boss died and
his cousin took over. He lacks experience and hired bad managers who lack experience. If it
continues like this I'm afraid it will shutdown. I'm not satisfied with the company.
Worker: Thank God my family doesn't need me. I'm only working to fix my apartment and
sustain myself.
Amine: What about bosses? Which ones are the best in your opinion? Spanish, French or
Moroccan?
Worker: It depends on the person, you could find a Moroccan boss who is doing a great job and
you could end up with a non Moroccan boss who is doing a poor job. There's everything in here.
