Problem Statements

1. Closed loop aeration with IoT

Dissolved oxygen is the most crucial parameter that decides the fate of fishes
survival in the pond or tank where fishes are grown in a simulated environment.
Thus, to save the fish mortality, power usage and labour efforts ,an automated
supply of aeration to the tanks by having a closed loop mechanism that is
efficient switches ON/OFF the aerator based on the dissolved oxygen level inside
the water.

2. Automatic flood and drain controller with level sensing

In case of the low-cost recirculating aquaculture system (first of it kind in India)

the water gets drained from fish tanks and supplied to filtration units through
gravity. That means when the grid power goes OFF the chances of water getting
drained is very high if the labour doesn't notice it (night times).
Hence, if we can automate to avoid any possibility of both flood and drain taking
place we can save both fish, precious water resource also labour efforts.

3. Fish Biomass calculator using Image processing technique

It becomes operationally extremely challenging to calculate the biomass of the

animals/fish inside the tanks when we have a mix of different fish species and
sizes of fish based on days of culture which is a key input for the quantum of feed
(expensive) we put and harvest planning for farmers
Overview of Tasks to be done

Problem statement - Fish Biomass calculator using Image processing technique.

To calculate the Fish Biomass first step is to calculate the total numbers of fishes
present in the tank and the steps involved in this are:

Task-1 Develop and train an object detection algorithm on the image to detect fish
in the tank.

Task-2 Then I have to calculate the total number of fishes in the tank.

Task-3 Hardware development to take the full image of the fishes in the tank for
further image processing.

Task-4 Differentiating fishes according to their breed and displaying the count of
each breed separately.

Task-5 Calculating the stage of the culture of fishes depending on their sizes and
start of the culture and calculating their diet.
INTRODUCTION

The monitoring of fish for stock assessment in aquaculture, commercial

fisheries and in the assessment of the effectiveness of biodiversity
management strategies such as Marine Protected Areas and closed area
management is essential for the economic and environmental
management of fish populations.
TASK-1 and 2

The aim is to build an custom object detector. Since we need to detect

objects of particular types (here fishes), we will train our detector with the
objects we want to detect. And for that we need to annotate the objects in
images. So breaking down the steps to build an object detector at very high
level,
 Collect training images.
 Annotate object locations in the training images.
 Train the Object Detector with the object regions.
 Save and test the trained detector.
Training images
Testing Image-1
Testing Image-2
Testing Image-3
RESULTS

 As it can be seen in the testing Images, detector missed some of the

fishes which is due to lack of training images.
 Training the detector with more images will improve the detector
 Also this technique may not be appropriate if fishes overlap which
will be definitely the case in farm so a new algorithm where I will
be aiming for the tails to count the fishes.
Future Work Plan
 Task3- Hardware development

Task-4 Differentiating fishes according to their breed and displaying the count of
each breed separately.

Task-5 Calculating the stage of the culture of fishes depending on their sizes
calculating their diet
