AMINO ACIDS. Indirectly related to LDN via Endorphins and brain chemistry.

Putting together info and links

about amino acids, neurotransmitters, and anti-depressants.

An excellent brief article about amino acids in general:

http://www.dcnutrition.com/aminoacids/

Some members have benefitted from taking DLPA which contains the D- and L- forms of phenylalanine the
L- form is the precursor to Tyrosine. For some reason people sometimes do better on LPA than the
Tyrosine directly. Tyrosine in turn is the precursor to the neurotransmitters called Catecholamines the
general effects are alertness, energy, mental focus, drive and enthusiasm. It should be taken an hour
before meals or two hours after. It is better to take in the morning or early afternoon because of the
energizing effect.

BTW those that have thyroid issues may be interested to know that Tyrosine is a building block of T3 and
T4. The 3 and 4 refer to the number of Iodine atoms in the molecule.

The D- form has a protective effect on Endorphins making them last longer so that can help with
psychological and physical pain and support feelings of pleasure, reward and loving. It *may* help LDN
work better because it makes more Endorphins available when the LDN initiated rebound happens.

You might not want the DLPA if you tend towards anxiety and fatigue is not an issue -- in that case just go
with the DPA.

I have both and use each at different times depending if I'm wanting more energy or pain relief. Neither one
is going to be like "getting hit on the head" with a pharmaceutical, but I find them useful.

If you are already taking any serotonin boosting medications (e.g. anti-depressants) or supplements (e.g.
SAM-e) you should consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking these. Something to be aware of:

Serotonin syndrome is not that common but it is complicated by being not easily diagnosed and is
potentially fatal. Anyone taking anti-depressants should have been given a special flyer about this and how
to avoid it IMO.

Persons with phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare, inherited metabolic disorder should avoid taking DLPA, as
they lack an enzyme that converts phenylalanine to tyrosine and must follow very strict dietary guidelines to
prevent toxic damage to the nervous system.

It would be good to read the book "The Mood Cure" for a more complete understanding. Here's an article

http://science.howstuffworks.com/life/endorphins1.htm..................
"Intriguingly, endorphins (or a lack thereof) may be responsible for certain forms of mental illness such as
obsessive-compulsive disorder. When you, the average person, are washing your hands, there's a point
when you register that the task has been satisfactorily completed. If endorphins are at least partly
responsible for saying "when," a person who doesn't have enough may never receive the mental cue to
stop washing his or her hands and will continue until that signal is received.

It's been theorized that problems with endorphin production or the binding process may be responsible for
clinical depression or sudden shifts in emotions. Some people who engage in self-hurting behaviors may
do so in part to feel the feelings of euphoria and emotional isolation that can -- for them -- be prompted by
controlled amounts of self-inflicted pain.

Endorphins may also be responsible for heightened states of rage or anxiety. If your endorphins overdo
their job or the hypothalamus misreads the endorphin cue, you could be flooded with "fight-or-flight"
hormones at the slightest hint of trouble or worry"
