Group 3 Presentation

(Members: Paghasian, Lactanin, Bongcarawan, Zaragosa)

Name at least five specific technologies that affects positively or negatively in terms of;
(include at least 2 technologies form COET library)

a) Employment
b) Economy
c) Health
d) Environment
e) Security

 Laptop Computers
 Smart Contact Lenses
 Electric Jeep (E-Jeep)
 Design of Molder Machine for Recycled HDPE Plastics
 Mobile Robot Platform with Simple Command Interface

1. Laptop Computers - often called a notebook, is a small, portable personal

computer (PC) with a "clamshell" form factor, typically having a
thin LCD or LED computer screen mounted on the inside of the upper lid of
the clamshell and an alphanumeric keyboard on the inside of the lower lid. The
clamshell is opened up to use the computer. Laptops are folded shut for transportation,
and thus are suitable for mobile use. Laptops are commonly used in a variety of
settings, such as at work, in education, for playing games, Internet surfing, for personal
multimedia, and general home computer use.
Advantages:
1. Employment:
 Portability
 Make all the tasks easier that are required to be done in offices.
 The best place where the important information of the business can be stored
for a longer period.
 The laptops save the person from the paperwork.
 The communication has become easier with the help of a laptop.
 The laptops are more likely get damaged due to falling, It can lose the display
as well as connection.
 The users don’t have access to the internal components of the laptop which is
why they become hard to repair.
Disadvantages:

1. Health:
 Laptops emit heat as they are running; it is this heat that may have disastrous
effects on your health.
 Male’s Fertility
 For women: Skin disease known as Toasted leg syndrome

2. Security:
 The laptops can become a serious threat to the security of important data of
business if they are left behind somewhere.

3. Environment:
 Production - Laptops also contain potentially dangerous substances.
 Use - Laptops do not consume much electricity, but they still have a carbon
footprint.
- Even a laptop at the highest end of power consumption using 80
watts per hour would only produce 0.05 kilograms (0.12 pounds) of carbon
per hour of use.

 Disposal - If laptops are not recycled, the lead, mercury and other toxic
components can contaminate the groundwater near landfills, entering the
environment.

Trivia

Its name comes from lap, as it was deemed to be placed on a person's lap when being
used. Although originally there was a distinction between laptops and notebooks (the
former being bigger and heavier than the latter), as of 2014, there is often no longer any
difference.

2. Smart Contact Lenses - are like implants but they don't require surgery and can
usually be removed or inserted by the user. They're neither on nor under the skin full
time. They're exposed to both air and the body's internal chemistry.
Advantages:

 Scan barcodes, price tags, and coupons.

 Authenticate identities.
 Help manage allergies.

 Monitor your blood-alcohol content and body temperature.

 Generate solar and ambient-light sourced power.

Disadvantages:

 Bigger risk of infections

 It can be easy to lose or damage contact lenses.
 Possible allergic reactions to contact lens cleaning solutions
 Eyelid complications, infection
 Wearing contact lenses can cost more than £300 per year, including the price
of cleaning solutions.

3. Electric Jeep (E-Jeep) - is meant to steer clear of the use of fossil fuels to help
mitigate climate change, even as it addresses urban problems such as air pollution and
solid waste.
Advantages:

 100% Electric (Environment- Friendly)

 Cashless (Fare can be paid through Beep cards)
 GPS tracking system, and CCTV cameras (Security)
 It has free WiFi onboard and USB ports.
 Comfortable (Though there is no air-conditioning, the jeep has several fans to
ensure rider comfort.)
 Home charging
 Quiet and smooth
 No Emissions
 Cheaper to operate
Disadvantages:
 Limited range - a full charge will take you 128 KM which is far and enough for
everyday driving but out of town trips and cross country trips may be difficult.

 Higher Cost - EV’s are more expensive than petrol cars. If sold the cheapest
would be 1.5 million pesos (based on dollar price tag).
 Charging time - it takes about an hour of charging to add about 30 km travel
distance to the car. For some that’s too long, refueling takes less than 10
minutes.

4. Mobile Robot Platform with Simple Command Interface

Mobile robot is one of the most popular robots for construction. Very common are
sumo robots, sports robots (football, volleyball etc.), robots simulating rescue operations
(fire fighting, person or object finding etc.) and many other. For these kinds of robots
there are many different competitions in the world and in Estonia, even standard
classes have been developed (e.g. sumo robots). The common feature for these types
of robots is mobile platform, which may have different construction and capabilities, but
its main functionality remains the same. It is controlling the motors and basic navigation,
which includes avoiding objects and travelling to the desired destination. Usually, a
specific functionality is added to the main functionality, which is planned according to
the requirements and opportunities set for the project.
