10 Essential Policies for Your Student Handbook

Every school has a student handbook. A handbook is a living, breathing tool that should be updated and
changed every year. As a school principal, it is essential that you keep your student handbook up-to-
date. It is also important to realize that every school is different. They have different needs and their
students have different issues. A policy that will work in one district, may not be as effective in another
district. There are ten essential policies that every student handbook should include.
Attendance Policy

Attendance does matter. Missing a lot of class can create huge holes that could lead to academic failure.
The average school year in the United State is 170 days. A student who misses an average of 10 days a
year beginning in pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade will miss 140 days of school. That adds up to
almost an entire school year that they have missed. Looking at it in that perspective, attendance
becomes increasingly important and without a solid attendance policy, it is virtually impossible to deal
with. Tardiness are equally important because a student who comes in late time after time is essentially
playing catch up every day they are late.

Bullying Policy

Never in the history of education has it been as important as it is today to have an effective bullying
policy. Students across the globe are affected by bullying every single day. The number of bullying
incidents only continue to increase each year. We hear about students dropping out of school or taking
their lives because of bullying all too often. Schools have to make bullying prevention and bullying
education a top priority. This starts with a strong bullying policy. If you haven't got an anti-bullying policy
or it hasn't been updated in several years it is time to address it.

Cell Phone Policy

Cell phones are a hot topic among school administrators. Over the last 10 years, they have increasingly
caused more and more problems. With that said, they can also be a valuable educational tool and in a
catastrophic situation, they can save lives. It is essential that schools evaluate their cell phone policy and
figure out what will work best for their setting.

Ang Cell Phone Policy ay isa rin sa batas na nakapaloob sa Student Diary ng St. Patrick School na
siyang madalas na problema ng paaralan.

Dress Code Policy

Unless your school requires your students to wear uniforms, then a dress code is essential. Students
continue to push the envelope when it comes to how they dress. There are so many distractions that a
student can cause by how they dress. Like many of these policies, they need to be updated yearly and
the community the school is located can influence what is appropriate and what is inappropriate. Last
year a student came to school wearing bright lime green contact lenses. It was a major distraction for
the other students and so we had to ask him to remove them. It wasn't something that we had dealt
with before, but we adjusted and added to our handbook for this year.

Student Handbook

Welcome to the Student Handbook Online. This web-based document provides access to information
about services and resources for students as well as policies and procedures. Please be aware that all
students are responsible for reading and knowing the contents of this handbook.

The Student Handbook is more than just a policy manual. It includes information about campus
resources (academic and otherwise), social events, safety information, the complete text of the
SGA Constitution and Bylaws and more. The Handbook lists offices, how to contact them and which
offices you may need to go to for particular information.

While you may wish to locate a specific resource or policy, the handbook is designed to facilitate a
reading from beginning to end. The link below will take you to the contents page. Each page contains
links at the bottom of the page to the previous page and the next page. By using the Next Page link, it is
possible to read the complete document from beginning to end.

In addition to the full handbook, the Handbook in Brief summarizes college policies and resources so you
can find important information quickly. Print copies of this abbreviated handbook are distributed to all
residential students through their house communities and to off campus students through the campus
mail system. There is also a downloadable PDF of the Handbook in Brief available.

Student Code of Conduct

The law requires the district to define misconduct that may—or must—result in a range of specific
disciplinary consequences, including removal from a regular classroom or campus, out-of-school
suspension, placement in a disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP), or expulsion from school.
This is what the Student Code of Conduct is for: it outlines which behaviors are prohibited and what the
consequence is for each violation.

The Code provides methods and options for managing students in the classroom and on school grounds,
disciplining students, and preventing and intervening in student discipline problems.

For example, Texas school districts have bullying prevention policies which include specific methods for
reporting and investigating bullying incidents. The consequences for bullying are outlined in the Code of
Conduct. The Code will specify if the school board may transfer the bully to another classroom or
campus in the district.

The Code is posted at each school campus, available for review at the campus principal’s office, and
posted on the district’s Website.

The Luther College Student Handbook is a collection of student conduct standards, policies, and
procedures that define community expectations for students at Luther. It also serves as an important
resource for students, highlighting a wide variety of topics related to life on the Luther campus.

It is the responsibility of each student to become familiar with the Student Handbook. Students must
also become familiar with other official publications including, but not limited to, the College Catalog,
Emergency Procedure Guide, Housing and Dining Contract, and other important documents pertaining
to student rights and responsibilities.

The Campus Life Committee, a campus-wide body comprised of students, faculty, and staff. Faculty

Campus Life Committee works in conjunction with members of the Student Life Office to ensure an
effective implementation of college policies and procedures.

The policies and statements included in the Student Handbook are not a contract and the college

Palm Tree Academy
2015
Shaping Our New Generation of Leaders Welcome to the Palm Tree Academy.

Palm Tree Academy (PTA) has been established on the strong belief that the intellect cannot be
separated from the spirit. Our goal is to provide the community with an institute that offers high-level
education integrated with leadership, and Islamic ethics, morals, and practices. By combining Islamic
principles and academic excellence, we create a learning process that is challenging, enjoyable,
rewarding, and meaningful. The purpose of the Student/ Parent Handbook is to give Palm Tree Academy
students and their parents an understanding of the general rules and guidelines for attending and
receiving an education in our institute. This handbook is prepared with the belief that all students, when
provided with the correct information, are capable of making sound judgments relating to the interests
of themselves, others, and the school. Students and their parents are expected to take an active role in
our school. It is through participation in activities that individuals gain feelings of satisfaction and
ownership. As parents, encourage your children to assume responsibility for maintaining an
environment where they can get the most out of education. Their behavior should reflect respect for
themselves, other people and property. Encourage them to take pride in our school. They, just as you
parents, play a key role in establishing the school’s reputation and in maintaining its high standards.
School policies and procedures are reviewed annually and are subject to modifications. New or modified
policies will generally supersede the provisions found in the Handbook. The Handbook is not a contract
between the school and parents or students. It can be amended at any time at the discretion of the
Board. If the Board revises the Handbook during the school year, the campus administration will make
all necessary attempts to communicate those changes to parents and students. The campus
administration may impose rules in addition to those found in the Student Code of Conduct and/or
Student/Parent Handbook. These will be relayed to parents and students in written form. Please review
all pertinent information with your child then sign and return the Parent Acceptance of Handbook (last
page) to the administrative office. Your signature is required to complete your child’s registration.
