Plan of investigation

The topic that my group chose was ‘Women’ and my sub topic is
‘Women’s Society’. I chose this topic because I want to expand my
knowledge about women’s role in society. This topic is beneficial to
me because it gives me a clear understanding of the struggles that
women face in the society. In the early days women were wives and
are given a say in anything. I think that the things that women go
through in the past aren’t something I as a woman would want to
live. Now women can have self-respect and make their choices.

Piece 1: Prose
Perfect Wives in Ideal Homes: The Story of Women
in the 1950s

Exactly who are the ’perfect wives’ of the 1950s? Were they the
drably dressed women still queuing for food up to a decade after the
Second World War has ended? Or were they sprightly looking
females in frilly pennies, manically waving a feather duster and
serving ‘delicious’ meals to their husbands? Women might have had
the vote on the same term as men since 1929 but for most that was
pretty well the limit of the equality. All working women get paid
much less than men and despite the responsibilities of sheer hard
grite many had endured in wartime, were still regarded as
submissive and inferior beings. Education opportunities were limited.
The 1944 Education Art was supposed to give everyone ‘parity of
esteem’, but that is not how it worked out. Many teachers and
parents had narrow expectations for girls whose destiny was to be
marriage, a home and a family, with work just an interim measure
between leaving school and walking down the aisle, rather than a
career. Just 1.2 percent of women went to university in the 1950s.

Piece 2: Poem
A Woman’s Worth

She gave life. She is a wife.

She is a mother and she is a friend.

She is a sister a survivor to the end.

Appreciate her, we don’t dare.

Ask her worries, we don’t care.

Wipe away her tears, they are invisible as air.

She works cooks and clean.

She laughs, helps comfort, and hides her pain.

When you struggle she pulls you through

All this is she and what do we do?

Complain and create a mess.

Provide stress and leave her feeling depressed..

Push her away and ignore her advice.

Tell her she is nothing without thinking twice.

She was raped tortured and abused.

Told she was nothing and would always be used just for pleasure forget her pain.

She swallows her pride, put her feelings aside.

Does as you need in order for you to be free.

Ignores your ignorance and tolerates your flaws.

5
You call her Bitch, Slut, Hoe and Tramp

She answers with pride dignity and a complete loss of self.

You call her nothing.

I call her Strong, Smart, Sensual, Caring, Giving, Surviving, Tolerant and powerful

I call her WOMAN!

Piece 3: Song
Die with My Dignity

You want to help to mind your family, you want to help your man financially,
But nowadays it really really hard to get a job as a girl in Trinidad,
You looking out to find something to do, you meet a boss man who promise to help
you,
But when the man let down the condition, nothing else but humiliation
They want to see you whole anatomy, they want to see what you doctor never see
They want to do what you husband never do, still you ain't know if these scamps will
hire you,

Well if is all this humiliation to get a job these days as a woman. Brother, they could
keep their money, I go keep my honey, and die with my dignity!!

Some oh dem done park up already, yet they sit down with high hypocrisy,
Using the power of the Kazan position, waiting to abuse and exploit any woman,
To get to work you have to go to bed with he, become a slave second wife and
deputy,
And as a next woman get on the line, he starts to tell you, you ain't good you can't
wine,
They want to see you in a fancy, fancy pose, they want to see how you look without
your clothes,
They want you cock up like a bloody acrobat, the wife at home they can't ask she to
do that,
So, before I have to lick down somebody and cuss them so the police come for me. I
tell them they can keep their money, I go keep my honey and die with my dignity!!

Looking for work you might bounce up a fellow, who might be looking quite
handsome and macho,
You tell you self you want to work with he, so you decide to try a radchafee
But when you done it's then you get to know, he wife leave he and gone long time
ago
With all the cash he have he is a failure, the man is nothing but a blinking sunja,

7
They want to feel up your navel and your breast, they want to see if you have on
your chest,
They think they can do you with the hand, like if they searching to find the promised
land,

I am a woman who don't make any skylark, before I slap them and they die of heart
attack, tell them they can keep their money I go keep my honey and die with my
dignity!!

It have a lot of women just like me, who might not be so well off financially,
You need a job and you really need it bad, ah man decide to help you must be glad,
But if you value yourself as a woman, you will be demanding respect from the
vagabond,
Stand up to them and let them know the truth, it work you want you are no blinking
prostitute,
You have a mole on you back they want to see, they want to see if you have marks
on you belly,
They want to know how much man you had before and if you are strong enough to
take any more,

I have me pride and I have me ambition, I want to hold up me head up high as a

woman. So, brother they could keep their money, I go keep my honey and die with
my dignity!!

Reflection of Pieces

My first piece ‘Perfect Wives in Ideal Homes’ by Virginia

Nicholson explains that women were practically use as maids
or housewives in the 1950s. What I understand about this piece
is that the writer explains that these women become
specialised in housing chores just like men they also have jobs
but they are paid low in income. Women especially young ones
were controlled by the hands of men and don’t have much of a
say due to priority or purpose mostly regarding to running the
home and parenting solely as a woman’s responsibility, and
men expecting meals to be ready when they returned from
work, making all the household decisions of consequence. The
use of language the writer use is to signify what she is trying to
say. In the prose quoted ‘perfect wives' the writer is trying to
figure out what made these wives perfect or how were they
brought up to be. This piece is beneficial to me because it
made realise that I as a young woman is being to become
dedicated woman in order to support or take care of myself
when I’m out in the open world
My second piece ‘A Woman’s Worth’ by Ashanti Holiday
explains that the author simply describes a few of the things
that a woman is and can be, along with a few things she has
done in her lifetime that are worth the recognition such as
giving birth. The poem also explains what women does to what
the society repays in return. The author indicates that narrator
goes through a phase where even when she is brought down
by words she still held her pride not taking anyone’s advice
even though they don’t help her. It shows that the woman is still
standing strong after being raped tortured and abused. The use
of language the writer’s use was synthetic but describes the
narrator to be something that she’s not it gives the reader a
clear view of what goes through women minds when they see
someone being used not only house wise purposes but for
other reason. This piece is beneficial to me because it shows
that no matter what anyone tells me words can’t bring me down
9
myself because i know what i’m capable of and what i can
become and what i’m worth.
My third piece Die with My Dignity’ by Singing Sandra
signifies that person rather dies with pride than to give herself
up to the hands of men. This song explains the difficulties
woman must go through just to get a job. Men who are bosses
tend to set conditions and demands to be approved and get
accepted. What I understand about the song is that men with
money tries to control the situation to get what they want. The
reason why the calypso artist Singing Sandra kept repeating
this line; “they could keep their money, I go keep my honey and
die with my dignity” to show that she respects herself as a
woman and would stand up for herself. In this piece the writer’s
use of dialect was to navigate the culture she comes from this
being said she explains what goes through men minds. Also
her choice in language shows that she knows what she is
saying and what goes in the past that we couldn’t see. This
piece is beneficial to me because it shows that i should have
respect for myself as a young woman and don’t let no man use
me for their purposes.

Oral Presentation

The topic for my SBA is ‘Women’ and my sub topic is ‘Women’s Society’.
Then genre that I chose was a song and the language used was Dialect.
I chose this topic because it gives me a clear understanding of what
women in the society go through to be where they are now.

This topic helps me to understand that life for woman wasn’t as easy as
it is now. Woman in the early 1950s were physically and verbally
abused, tortured, used as slaves and or prostitutes. I as woman
acknowledge the pain and suffering that these women endured with little
to support themselves and children or difficulties in finding a proper job.
Now as society changes, women are educated and become

Written Report (Women)

The members of my group Mariah Gonzales, Selena Sammy,

Kairos Joseph, Priya Kitten and myself Precious Mulligan
chose “Women” as our topic because of its pertinence of the
role of women in today’s worlds. It exposed us to the struggles
females face in many countries on a regular basis. The three
selected pieces were obtained from various internet sources.
The genre of these pieces was prose, poem and a song. We
used the “Choose the best Strategy” as all of the group
members sat around a table and came to a conclusion that the
three selected pieces were the best. The prose “Women’s Civil
Rights” by Mariko Hirata was chosen because we found it to be
informative. This piece entailed and highlighted some of the
history of the women’s revolution and some of the many
problems women had faced then and now. The prose was
understandable and related perfectly to our main topic. The
poem “Fight like a Girl” by Shah Rukh Khan was chosen
because of the usage of literary devices it contained and it was
also a persuasive piece. We understood the main idea and
message that was reflected off from this poem. The song
“Superwoman” by Alicia keys was chosen because it was
characterized by the writer and expressed spontaneously. We
found this song to be motivational, it followed a method of
rhyme and the intended image created was understood by
everyone. These three pieces were analysed by group
discussions where we looked for reasons, problems and usage
of literary devices. The outcome of this topic was that it helped
us to shape our minds to better understand women and how
much they mean to us. They hold great significance in our
lives. We must value, appreciate, and salute them for their
tolerance, patience and strength. We edited and took notes to
ensure that this report was done properly.
