3] Design Consideration
Water Tank is a column supported intz type of 18 lacs liter capacity. Conical slab is
between bottom ring beam at +24.00 LVL (T.O.C) and top ring beam. Construction up
to the ring beam at +24.00 LVL shall be completed and construction of conical slab shall
be started after the bottom ring beam achieves full compressive strength.
The circumferential bars shall transfer the conical Hoop tension due to the weight of
green concrete and the shuttering weight and radially placed lattice shall transfer the
compression due to meridional force due to the green concrete and shutteing weight.
Construction of whole conical slab will be in segments of 1.5 m from the support.
Construction time between construction of two segment will be not less than 7 days.
Hence after 7 days, segment will help to transfer the meridional force due to the self
weight of concrete of above segment so in attached calculation lattice has to carry the
load due to the only one segment.
Formwork for the conical slab will not be removed until the concreting of the domes will
be competed.

It is clear from the above calculation that the stress in concrete is much less than the
compressive strength at 7 day ie: 21 N/mm2forM30 concrete.

Hence the radial lattice supporting the shuttering is to be checked for only one segement
which is giving the maximum meridional force.

5] Design Calculation for Weld length for lacing of the lattice
Capacity of 6 mm thick filet weld for unit length = 0.707 x 6 x 108
= 458.136 N
Capacity of 6 mm butt weld with the 6 mm plate as per IS816 -1969 = ((5/8)x6) x150
= 562.7 N
Maximum force for weld design in lacing (Clause 5.7.2.1 IS800 -1984)

ie 2.5 % of Total axial load as shear = (2.5 X 36.52) /100 = 0.913 KN

There for weld length (fillet) required for

Connection of lacing member with gusset = 913 /458.136 = 1.99 mm

There for weld length (Butt) required for

Connection of Gusset with Main member = 913/562.7 = 1.62 mm

However minimum weld length (fillet) (detail B) provided with main member = 96 mm
And for the vertical member with the gusset plate = 150 mm
However minimum weld length (Butt) (detail B) provided for connection of gusset with
main member = 52 mm

The welding of the lacing member with the top and bottom member of the lattice is designed
base on the stipulation of IS 800 1984 clause no 5.7.2.1 and clause no 5.7.7 (where the lacing
is directly welded to the main member)

As the above stipulations are not excepted by you a gusset plate is provided with but joint
with the main member considering incomplete penetration or unsealed single butt joint as per
IS816 – 1964 page no 6

6] Design Calculation for lacing of the lattice
As Per clause 5.7.2.1 IS 800 1984

Lacing member shall be designed to resist transverse shear V equal to 2.5 % of total axial
load in the lattice.

There For V = (2.5 X 36.52) /100 = 0.913 KN

Area of lacing required = V/ τv = (0.913 x 1000) / 100 = 9.13 mm2

Where V = 913 N

Τv = Permissible shear = 100 N/mm2

However area of ISA 40x40x5 = 378 mm2 which is more than required

Check for slenderness

Maximum length of lacing = 1185 mm

Radius of gyration r (from steel table) for ISA 40x40x5 = 12 mm

Slenderness γ = L/r = 1185/12 = 98.75 < 145

there for ok as per clause 5.7.2.3 IS 800 1984

Provide 16# Tie bars with the horizontal turn buckle at 18◦0’0” (10 No) as an additional
precaution
