Narrative Report for Borrowed Books

(Grade Four)
The goal of the 21st century education is to produce graduates who are skilled
with the necessary competencies for personal and national development. Among this
competencies is the ability to read with comprehension and understanding.
Reading is one of the primordial components of the learning process. It is not
only limited to understanding but also in the development of the critical thinking. Several
programs were launched to improve the reading abilities of Filipino learners, however,
results of the Phil-IRI shows an alarming number of frustrated readers for both Filipino
and English. This means that in spite of the efforts of the teachers to teach reading,
many are still left behind.

As one of the assistance given by the SDO-Batangas City Library, Kumintang

Elementary School requested for copies of different books suited for each grade level.
The books were delivered on time but due to a higher demand from different schools,
number of books delivered was not sufficient to allow learners to have a book ratio of
1:1. In this case, Grade – 4 teachers alternately used the books during the intervention
time.

Pupils were very happy when they saw the new books. Their interest in reading
was revitalized. Teachers allowed them to read the books during their free and
intervention time. They also exchanged each other’s book so everybody will have the
chance to read new stories. After reading, the teachers asked some to read the stories
in front of the class. Several questions about the stories were raised to assess whether
the learners listened well or not.

This assistance of the Division Librarian is commendable. We are hoping that the
implementation of this program will continue as it has a very big help in our commitment
to provide the best education service for our learners.
