PROMINENT PERSONALITIES

ELI WHITNEY

According to Mirsky (2019), Eli Whitney was born on December 8, 1765 at


Westboro, Massachusetts U.S and died on January 8, 1825 at New Haven, Connecticut U.S.
He was an American inventor, mechanical engineer and a manufacturer. As a matter of fact,
he was remembered as the inventor of the Cotton Gin during his time. Moreover, he was
also remembered for developing the concept of mass production of interchangeable parts.
Way back on late 70’s, Eli Whitney entered at Yale College where he learned many of the
new concepts and experiments in science and the applied arts until it was called as a
technology. However, when the time that English Mills were hungry for cotton, Eli Whitney
invented a machine that resolved the problem on cotton and it was called Cotton Gin. Later
on, Eli Whitney and Miller went into business of manufacturing and servicing the new gins.

FREDERICK WINSLOW TAYLOR

As stated by Mee (2019), Frederick W. Taylor was born on March 20, 1856 at
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S and died on March 21, 1915 at Philadelphia. He was an
American inventor and engineer. Not only, but also known as the Father of Scientific
Management and his system of industrial management was influenced the development of
virtually every single country in the world using the benefits of modern industry. On the
late 80’s, he entered Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. After that, he passed the
entrance examination for Harvard but he was forced to stop studying due to his
deteriorated eye sight from studying at night. After he recovered, he was assign as an
apprentice to learn the trades of patternmaker and machinist at the enterprise hydraulic
work in Philadelphia. Three years later, he works to the Midvale Steel Company where he
starts as a machine shop laborer up to the chief engineer. As a matter of fact, in 1881 at the
age of 25, he introduced time study at the Midvale plant which he formed the basic
subsequent theories of management science and suggested the production efficiency that
could enhanced the elimination of waste time and operation.

FRANK AND LILIAN GILBRETH

As mention by Clayton (2017), Frank and Lilian Gilbreth was a married couple who
made a significant contribution to the management theory. Frank Gilbreth was born in a
year of 1868 at Maine. He had an opportunity to study at MIT and he became a bricklayer.
Later on, he had his own engineering consultancy, Gilbreth Inc. at the age of 27 because of
his intelligence.
Eventually, he met Lilian Moller who got her interest in the new ideas of scientific
management and Taylorism. Lilian Moller Gilbreth was born in a year of 1878 at California
and she became the first female professor in the engineering school at Purdue University
after his husband died due to the heart attack. As a result, she was known as the First Lady
of Management and became a pioneer of industrial psychology.

HENRY FORD & CHARLES SORENSEN

On the report of A&E Television Networks (2019) stated that, Henry Ford was born
on a year of 1863. He was working as an engineer for the Edison Illuminating Company in
Detroit and while working on the said company, he built his first gasoline-powered
horseless carriage called Quadricycle. On the early 90’s, he established the Ford Motor
Company and after five years of being established, he released the first model T and later
on, he introduced revolutionary mass production methods including the large production
plants, the use of standardized, interchangeable parts and the world’s first moving
assembly line for cars.

Furthermore, in relation to Henry Ford, based on the article of

the Ford Motor Company on the early 90’s as a pattern maker and foundry man. He was an
instrumental to the projects of the Ford Motor Company and he was in charge for all Ford
production from 1925-1944 and later on, he became the vice president and board member
in 1941.

WILLIAM EDWARDS DEMING

As claimed by Vliet (n.d) that William Edwards Deming was an American


statistician. He was a famous quality management guru that aiming for continuous
improvement in their organization. He learned about the management principles of
statistical process control (SPC), a precursor of Total Quality Management. As a matter of
fact, he was considered as a most influential non-Japanese person in the field of Japanese
Manufacturing Industry and he was a proponent of the famous Plan-Do-Check-Act Model
and his 14 points on Management.
