carbonated drinks. It is also used in fire extinguishers.

Sulfur is an important element in medicines. If you have bronchitis and are coughing all the
time, sometimes doctors give you sulfa-drugs. This medicine is made with sulfur and helps kill
the bacteria making you sick.

for preservation of the fresh of packaged or bulk foods by safeguarding against oxidative
damage.

pharmacological drug class, including antibiotics.

Chlorine
It is used to treat drinking water and swimming pool water.

In the chemical industry it is used to make ammonia for agricultural fertiliser (the Haber
process) and cyclohexane and methanol.

It is also used to remove sulfur from fuels during the oil-refining process.

Iodine is used to for radiation emergencies, to protect the thyroid gland against radioactive
iodides.
