Project Summary

The SARENA SAfe and REliable Nuclear Applications programme is an innovative program which combines: •
Global knowledge and skills in nuclear physics and chemistry,• Strong knowledge and skills in nuclear
engineering, nuclear waste management, dismantlement and decommissioning,• Practical experience in reactor
operation and safety,• Practice in state-of-the-art installations,• Complementary skills of 4 European renowned
partner universities, • Partnership between academia and industry at an international level, • Top-quality
education of students from Europe and around the world. The proposed two year Master of Science in Nuclear
Engineering, SARENA - SAfe and REliable Nuclear Applications aims to develop scientific, technical and
management skills enabling engineers to work in all domains related to nuclear energy and applications with a
strong international culture, thus allowing students from around the world to join the programme. It consists of an
integrated and balanced programme, fully taught in English, covering a wide range of nuclear applications
including nuclear power plant (NPP) design and operation and addresses the important issue of safe
management of radioactive waste and installations dismantlement and decommissioning, which is a pre-requisite
for sustainability. The high standard of European safety culture teaching is predominant within the programme as
well as management with a specific focus on the role of human factors and organisations. The teaching
programme is strongly supported by hands on training in the facilities available in the consortium institutions and
used to develop high quality Research & Development activities. It also benefits from strong ties between the
consortium institutions and the associate partners, industrial organisations, regulators, and international
organisations, which offer teaching and practical experience within their facilities and above all the opportunities
for internships. Educating international engineers with strong European culture is expected to help the European
nuclear industry to prospect new markets worldwide. Our proposed master programme aims to become an
international standard for teaching nuclear engineering and applications. The program is designed with 3
complementary semesters with graduated learning from broad basic nuclear engineering teaching in semester 1
in addition to a management module with contribution to theory of organizations, organizational factors of safety
and management of technology in the nuclear field, thus providing a comprehensive train taking into account both
technical and management issues, pre-specialization teaching in semester 2 to specialization in semester 3.
SARENA ends with a master thesis carried out either in a company or a research institution. There is strong
involvement of lecturers from industry in the academic semesters in particular in semester 3.
