1 Introduction
The Enterprise Online Configuration Utility is an application program that allows you to
configure and view live data from XM® modules. The Allen-Bradley® XM Series from
Rockwell Automation, Inc. is a family of DIN rail-mounted condition monitoring and
protection modules that operate both in stand-alone applications or integrate with
programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and control system networks. You install and
operate the Online Configuration Utility as part of an Emonitor® system that includes XM
Online Data.
The Online Configuration Utility is always started from the XM Online Data program.
The Online Configuration Utility runs in its own window. The Online Configuration
Utility not a driver or a service, and should not be left running after you have finished
configuring your XM modules and networks.
Exiting the Online Configuration Utility when it is not needed conserves system resources and
reduces network traffic.
You use the Enterprise Online Configuration Utility to configure XM modules. In addition
to the manuals, the Online Configuration Utility provides online help.
The documents are intended to be used in the following order:
1. Follow the instructions in the individual XM Module User Guides to install the XM
modules on a DeviceNet™ network.
2. Follow the instructions in the Enterprise Online Configuration Utility Getting Results
Guide to configure the XM modules.
This book is intended to give a general overview of the Online Configuration Utility
software. Please refer to the online help for more detailed information.

1 • INTRODUCTION
In general, the Online Configuration Utility communicates with XM modules through an Ethernet
network and an Ethernet-DeviceNet gateway such as the XM-500 module or 1788-EN2DN
device. However, you can also connect directly to a DeviceNet network, using the Enterprise
Online Configuration Utility. See the online help for more information.
Typically, in an Emonitor Online System, the Online Configuration Utility is installed and
run on an Unload Station computer in an Emonitor Online system. The Enterprise Online
Configuration Utility can only be started from the XM Online Data program. The XM
Online Data program must be installed with the Enterprise Online Configuration Utility.
Both are installed with Emonitor.
The Online Configuration Utility stores the network and XM module configuration in a
network configuration file. Other programs, such as XM Online Data also use this
network configuration file to get, display, and export data from the XM modules.
The Online Configuration Utility can work in either online or offline modes.
When you are working online, (the computer hosting the Online Configuration
Utility is connected to the network) you can browse networks. You can communicate
with XM modules to upload and download configuration parameters, and to view
data.

Initial steps
There are several steps that you must follow before using the Online Configuration Utility
to communicate with your XM modules. These include installing and commissioning
your XM modules, registering the electronic data sheets (EDS files) for the XM modules,
and configuring the Ethernet driver with RSLinx. See Quick Start initial steps on page 22.
Working “online”
When you are working online, the computer hosting the Online Configuration Utility is connected
to the network. You can browse networks and upload configuration parameters from XM
modules. You can then edit them as needed, and then download them back to the XM module. In
addition, you can also monitor data from the XM module, including the configuration parameters.
The system includes several components. The computer and the network gateway
modules communicate over an Ethernet network. Each network gateway communicates
with other XM modules over a separate DeviceNet network, as shown below.

3 • GETTING STARTED WITH ENTERPRISE ONLINE CONFIGURATION UTILITY
Working “offline”
When you are working offline, you can edit the network and XM module configuration parameters
and save them to the network configuration file. You can download the parameters to the network
later when you go online. The XM module configuration parameters that appear when working
offline are either:
the parameters you last saved to the configuration file, or
the factory defaults from the electronic data sheet.
When you configure your system offline, you create a network configuration file, just as
you do when you configure your system online. The difference is that when you work
offline, you must describe your system in the Online Configuration Utility, instead of
having the Online Configuration Utility scan for DeviceNet networks and XM modules.
See Quick Start steps to configure your network offline on page 29.
View data
The Online Configuration Utility displays data from XM modules in both interactive Plot
windows and numeric data tables. The available plot types depend on the type of XM
module, and can include trend, spectrum, spectrum map, and time waveform plots. You
can only view data when online. See Quick Start steps for viewing data on page 34.

You can also use a programmable logic controller (PCL) as the Ethernet-DeviceNet gateway,
in the place of a network gateway module. However, you cannot use the Online Configuration
Utility to configure or communicate with a PLC. Contact Technical Support for more
information.
Before you can add any XM module to a DeviceNet network, it may need to be
commissioned. This means that a node address and a baud rate must be programmed into
the XM module.
Most DeviceNet devices are factory commissioned with default values per the DeviceNet
specification. Usually, the node address is set to 63 and the data rate is set to 125K baud.
As long as the factory default parameters do not conflict with those of other devices
already on the network, you can connect the new device to the network and then use Tools
> Node Commissioning to change the node address and baud rate. If the date rate or
address conflicts, use a separate network to commission the device or use the XM Serial
Configuration Utility program with a local (serial cable) connection between the XM
module and the computer. The XM Serial Configuration Utility is included with the XM
modules.
If you have not set up your DeviceNet network yet, and cannot connect to an XM module with the
Online Configuration Utility, use the XM Serial Configuration Utility program with a local (serial
cable) connection between the XM module and the computer.
Before using the Online Configuration Utility with XM modules, you must first register
the electronic data sheets (EDS) for those modules. This stores the configuration and
identification information for the XM modules in the EDS library, and allows you to
access that information from the Online Configuration Utility.
1. Start the EDS Registration program. Click the Windows Start button, then select
Programs > Rockwell Software > RSLinx > Tools > EDS Hardware Installation
Tool.
2. In the Hardware Installation Tool, click Add to launch the EDS Wizard to add the
EDS files.
3. Follow the directions in the Wizard to register all the EDS files for the XM modules.
The EDS files are located in the Online Configuration Utility program directory. The
default directory for the EDS files is \Program Files\Rockwell Software\Emonitor.
4. Close the Hardware Installation Tool when finished.

workstation.
4. If the Online Configuration Utility is not already online, select Network > Go Online.
The word “Online” appears in the status bar at the bottom-right of the program
window.
5. Select Network > Refresh Network. The program browses the network to locate any
network gateway modules. The network gateway communicates between your
Ethernet network and the DeviceNet network.
6. After the program locates the network gateways connected to your Ethernet network,
browse the DeviceNet network attached to each network gateway module. Select the
first network gateway module by clicking it, then select Network > Refresh
Network. This locates all the devices (including XM modules) on the DeviceNet
network connected to that network gateway.
7. Repeat step 6 for each network gateway module.
You can also select Network > Auto Browse Network. The program automatically browses the
network, updating the Tree View and Graph View periodically. Auto browsing increases the
amount of network traffic, which may increase the response time from devices on the network.

In this step you add one or more network gateway modules to the network configuration.
A network gateway module is a unique device that acts as both an Ethernet network
device and a DeviceNet network device. This makes it a “gateway” between the two
networks. The examples in this section use an XM-500 network gateway module, but you
use the same steps to add any network gateway.
In these steps, you first add and configure the Ethernet side of the network gateway
module. See the network gateway User's Guide for setting the IP address and other
hardware-related information.
