LINKING SOUND

This is a summary of the rules for linking.

1. C + V

For example: (An apple)


a. Silent ‘e’ – cross out and link to the sound before. (Like it)
b. Silent ‘h’ – cross out and link to the sound after.

2. V + V =

If the first vowel sound is an /i/ and your mouth is in the “smiling” position, the link
sounds is ‘y’.
For example : (See it)

3. V = V =

If the first vowel sound is an /uw/ sound and your mouth is round, the linking sounds is
‘w’
For example : (to all)

4. C + C

If a word ends with a continuant and the next word begins with the same continuant,
make a consonant l o n g e r
For example : (Nice city)
