INTRODUCTION

Agritourism has risen progressively in the tourism industry that contributes to the

economy of the country. Given the fact that this form of tourist is highly profitable and very much

in demand, farm owners are more engaged to improve the lives of local community through

Valerosa Farm Adventure Resort.

Over the years, tourism industry brought as many changes and development into the

society, its growth became the major contributor to the economic act. It created jobs and

opportunities for both big and small community.

The Extent of Willingness of Locals to Participate in Agritourism is the title of this

research which intends to determine the impact of the farm in terms of the opportunities brought

to the community and asses the level of willingness of locals, effects in the employment rate

and community involvement. Thus, the willingness of locals to participate is a huge factor to the

development on the community as well as the farm itself.

Community nowadays has their enough knowledge in terms of contributing in any other

ways to the development of their place then of course they also want to be involved in the

sharing of tourism benefits. Tourism businesses have develop benefit-sharing schemes that

favour local people to access tourism benefits. This schemes include local employment, local

capacity building, in sharing tourism profits with the wider community. Tourism development is
contributing positively towards poverty alleviation, and has made improvement on accessibility,

prices of goods and services, employment, entrepreneurial training, income-generating projects,

households income and general quality of life though the extent of contribution vary from one

aspect to another. (COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND PARTICIPATION IN TOURISM

DEVELOPMENT IN TANZANIA, Muganda Michael, Victoria University of Wellington 2009)

The agritourism site in the municipality of Ocampo, Pili and Baao, integrates agriculture

and leisure. The on-going growth of the farm resort gives many changes to the community

particularly to these municipalities. Determining the factors that affects the willingness of local to

participate, the different Agritourism sites might contribute to the possible development of the

community in terms of improving the community involvement while the farm itself is

progressing.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Farm resort is one of the most and high contributors to the development of the community

particurlarly in the Agritourism sites such as Bismonte Farm in Baao, Strawberry Farm in

Ocampo and Choco Farm in Pili. Therefore this research aims to assess the level of willingness

of locals to participate in Agritourism. Moreover, this research intends to answer the following

questions:

1. What are the activities that these Agritourism sites offer to extend help in their respective

local communities?

2. What are the opportunities gained by locals from the Agritourism sites in their

municipality?

3. In what way that the willingness of locals to participate affects the development of its

community?

4. What are the contributions of these Agritourism sites in the community in terms of social,

cultural, environmental and economic aspects?

5. To what extent is the level of willingness of locals to participate in Agritourism?

OBJECTIVES

Generally, the extent of willingness of locals to participate in Agritourism is essential to

the development of the community in the municipalities of Baao, Ocampo and Pili. Thus, this

research aims to attain the following objectives:

1. To determine the activities that these Agritourism sites offer to extend help in their

respective local communities.

2. To identify the opportunities gained by locals from the Agritourism sites in their

municipality.

3. To identify how the willingness of locals to participate affects the development of its

community.

4. To determine the contributions of these Agritourism sites in the community in terms

of social, cultural, environmental and economic aspects.

5. To assess the extent of willingness of locals to participate in Agritourism.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The extent of willingness of the locals to participate in Agritourism is what the farm

needs to help improve the lives of the community through providing jobs, opportunities and

other assistance that would be beneficial to both locals and the farm itself. The conduct of this

study will help the following:

COMMUNITY

This research serves as an eye-opener to the community in the municipality of Baao,

Ocampo and Pili, on how the farm and resorts are helping them to obtain possible benefits from

having Agritourism sites in their community.

Local Government Unit (LGU)

Thus research will help them realize how helpful to have a farm resorts in their

community, which leads them to support those individuals who are persistent and willing to

establish their own farm resorts. This will be their way in helping and developing the

municipalities.
FARM RESORTS

This research will give them an idea on how they can help their community through their

farm. Also this research will make the Bismonte Farm in Baao, Strawberry Farm in Ocampo and

Choco Farm in Pili. realize their responsibilities in their respective community.

Farm Sites in terms of the assistance they obtain and how it affects the willingness of the local

to participate in Agritourism.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter contains the information inquest from different literature and related to this

research, it enables the researchers to conceptualize the problem. This chapter will help the

reader in understanding the extent of willingness of locals to participate in Valerosa Farm

Adventure Resort.

According to Mcgehee, (2010) is agritoursim is growing trend nowadays that help to the

economic opportunities of the local community especially in the municipality of Ocampo.

The extent of willingness of locals to participate in Agritourism depends on variety of

reasons and being affected of different factors. Claims of tourism’s economic significance give

the industry greater respect among the business community, public officials, and the public in

general. This often translates into decisions or public policies that are favourable to tourism.

Community support is important for tourism, as it is activity that affects the entire community.

Tourism businesses depend extensively on each other as well as on other businesses,

government and residents of the local community. Economic benefits and costs of tourism reach

virtually everyone in the region in one way or another. Economic impact analyses provide

tangible estimates of these economic interdependencies and a better understanding of the role

and important of tourism in a region’s economy ( Daniel J. Stynes, Economic impacts of

Tourism, Page #1)

Furthermore, tourism has become one of the wolrd’s mpost important sources of

employment. It stimulates enormous investments infrastructure, most of which also helps to

improve the living conditions of local people. It provides governments with substantial tax

revenues. Most new tourism jobs and business are created in developing countries, helping to

equalize opportunities and keep rural residents from moving to overcrowded cities (UNWTO,

2010).
According to Barbieri, 2013, Tew, 2010 agritourism is receiving a great deal of attention

because of many benefits it can bring to farmers, visitors, and communities. The industry has

shown strong potential for growth, but greater understanding is needed to develop and promote

the union of production agriculture and tourism.

Moreover according to Solimar International “Tourism enterprises can have an

incredible impact on their destination by creating jobs, contributing to GDP, bringing in new

markets for goods and services, increasing an area’s visibility, all while protecting the local

environment and preserving cultural heritage”.

According to Wicks and Merrett, “it is very likely that agritourism development in the
Midwest can be successfully integrated into local economies, environments, and rural lifestyles
without great disruption.” Indeed, agritourism is critical to the economic health of rural Indiana
and the sustainability of family farms. Although it will not create a massive amount of jobs in any
one rural region, agritourism creates opportunities for individuals to financially sustain a rural
lifestyle.

The Director of the Indiana Office of Tourism Development (IOTD), stated that “agritourism can
be successful in rural areas when they are highlighted and embraced.” Brian Blackford,

Agritourism is among the fastest growing industries in the eco-tourism sector. It is a growing
division of the tourism industry that has been driven by the restructuring of the agricultural
industry (Che, 2009). For example, rural policies and structural adjustment funding have
enabled and assisted farmers to capitalise on historic structures that can be converted into
tourism accommodation

METHODOLOGY

For the purpose of this research, the writer has decided to use a combination of two of

classic social sciences research tools – questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaires will

be distributed among selected respondents from the community. As a complementary method,

the researchers conducted interviews with an equal number of representatives from each

municipality.

QUESTIONNAIRES

Questionnaires were chosen for this research because they are a reliable and

generalizable, because of the subjectivity of data obtained. On the other hand their flexible

format contributed for a deeper explanation and understanding how the willingness of locals to

participate in Agritourism.
