Course Objective: The objective of this course is to understand the computer network
organization and implementation, obtaining theoretical understanding of data
communications and gaining practical skills on configuration of network devices.
Course Rationale: This course aims to prepare students for computer networking careers
after graduation. Students gain general knowledge of electronic data communication, industry
terminology, common equipment, and standard hardware and software requirements.

Use of Computer Networks, Network Hardware, Network software, Reference models: OSI
and TCP/IP, Example Networks, Physical Layer: The theoretical basis for Data
Communication, Guided Transmission media.
Switching Data Link Layer: DLL design issues. Error Detection and Correction, Elementary
data link protocols, sliding window protocols. Medium Access Control Sub layer: Channel
allocation problem, multiple access protocols, Ethernet.
Network Layer: Network layer design issues, Routing algorithms, congestion control
algorithms, Quality of service, Internetworking, network layering the Internet

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Every student is expected to be responsible for regularity of his/her attendance in classrooms
and laboratories, to appear in scheduled tests and examinations and fulfill all other tasks
assigned to him/her in every course. For Promotion, a Minimum of 40% of internal marks
must be obtained. In every course, student has to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance to
be eligible for appearing in Semester end examination of the course, for cases of medical
issues and other unavoidable circumstances the students will be condoned if their attendance
is between 65% to 75% in every course, subjected to submission of medical certificates,
medical case file and other needful documental proof to the concerned departments.
PLAGIARISM POLICY
Use of unfair means in any of the evaluation components will be dealt with strictly, and the
case will be reported to the examination committee.
Each instructor will specify his / her chamber consultation hours during which the student can
contact him / her in his / her chamber for consultation.
