BARRIERS AFFECTING THE SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION 11

CHAPTER II

Methodology of the Study

Research Design

This study used the descriptive-survey method in gathering the needed

data. According to Best and Kahn (2007), the term descriptive research has often

been used incorrectly to describe three types of investigation that are different.

Perhaps their superficial similarities have obscured their difference. Each of them

employs the process of disciplined inquiry through the gathering and analysis of

empirical data, and each attempts to develop knowledge. To be done

competently, each requires the expertise of the careful and systematic

investigator. The idea behind of this type of research is to study frequencies,

averages, and other statistical computations. Descriptive researchhas a main

goal to describe the data, necessary information, and characteristics about what

is being studied. The researchers used this method to depict the participants in

an accurate way and to recognize the barriers affecting the second language

acquisition.

Participants

The research was conducted at Holy Cross College, Sta. Lucia, Sta. Ana,

Pampanga, in the School Year 2017-2018. The researchers chose random

sampling of respondents in the study. The chosen participants were 500 Senior

High School students coming from the selected students of HUMS, ABM, STEM,

Data Gathering Instrument

The researchers structured and used three sets of questionnaires

validated by the Language Research adviser. The first questionnaire, which

identifies the Barriers Affecting the Second Language Acquisition and the

following rating is used: 5-Strongly Agree, 4-Agree, 3-Strongly Disagree, 2-

Disagree, and 1- Not at All. The second questionnaire determines the barriers in

second language acquisition regarding the methods used by the English teacher.

The following scale is used: 5-Always, 4-Often, 3-Sometimes, 2-Seldom, and 1-

Never. The last one, which identifies the barriers in second language acquisition

in the delivery of the second language of the language teacher and following

rating is used: 5-Always, 4-Often, 3-Sometimes, 2-Seldom, and 1- Never.

Administration of Questionnaire and Data Collection

The researchers prepared a letter and approved by the Langauge

Research Adviser and signed by the College Dean to plot the questionnaires to

the research’s respondents. The researchers secured a permit from the Principal

of Holy Cross College, Senior High School Department and the Head of English

Department. The respondents answered the three questionnaires given by the

researchers.

Statistical Treatment of Data

In analyzing and interpreting the data gathered, descriptive statistical

techniques were applied such as weighted mean, point scale and descriptive

rating. The techniques were used to identify the problems that affect the reading

comprehension and spelling skills of the learners.

The scale used in determining the descriptive ratings of the numerical

ratings of the barriers affecting the second language acquisition encountered by

the students was as follow:

Weighted Mean Point Scale Descriptive Rating

4.51 – 5 5 Strongly Agree
3.51 – 4.50 4 Agree
2.51 - 3.50 3 Strongly Disagree
1.51 - 2.5 2 Disagree
1 – 1.5 1 Not at all

The scale used in determining the descriptive ratings of the numerical

ratings on the teacher’s practices on the delivery of the second language was as

follow:

Weighted Mean Point Scale Descriptive Rating

4.51 – 5 5 Always
3.51 – 4.50 4 Often
2.51 - 3.50 3 Sometimes
1.51 - 2.5 2 Seldom
1 – 1.5 1 Never

To analyze and determine the descriptive ratings of the numerical ratings

on the teacher’s methodology the researchers used the following scales:

Weighted Mean Point Scale Descriptive Rating

4.51-5 5 Always
3.51-4.50 4 Often
2.51 - 3.50 3 Sometimes
1.52-2.50 2 Seldom
1-1.5 1 Never
