TASK: Look at the following image. Analyse the Mise en Scene and describe
why the shot has been set up as it has. Remember to consider all five
elements.
Lighting ~ The chamber is gold because the colour suggests wealth and regality but as the camera
centres in the brightness of the Gold increases around Odin because he is the most important
person present and the focal point of the shot.
In contrast, Thor is presented by his bright red cape, Red is the colour of victory and Thor is a
warrior before he is a prince.
Props ~ The soldiers present in the throne room are all armed with standard defence spears where
as the King is armed with a Staff which are usually synonymous with magic and incantations.
Costumes ~ Every person present is clad in some variation of battle ready armour bar the Queen
which in turn suggests that this is a society of warriors who live in war and the Queen is spared
from this as Queen’s usually aren’t expected to fight.
Performance ~ This scene shows the King Odin standing tall above his son clearly presenting his
dominance and superiority whilst Thor is kneeling in due respect and the Queen along with the
warriors 3 are situated close to Odin as they have a higher status and are closer personally to the
King.
