Homework N°: 5, Electron Gun ;Date: March 1 2018- Cajica;

An electron gun is the element that serves to generate and direct a beam of
electrons properly and with sufficient energy. The electron gun is a
fundamental part of an image tube, an electron microscope and the electron
source of a particle accelerator.
A DC electrostatic thermionic electron gun consists of several parts: a hot
cathode, which is heated to create a current of electrons through thermionic
emission, electrodes generating an electric field that focuses the beam (such
as a Wehnelt cylinder) ) and one or more anode electrodes that accelerate
and focus more electrons. A large voltage between the cathode and the
anode accelerates the electrons. A repulsive ring placed between them
focuses the electrons at a small point on the anode at the expense of a
lower extraction field strength at the cathode surface. Often at this point, it is
a hole so that the electrons that pass through the anode form a collimated
beam and eventually reach a second anode called a collector. This
arrangement is similar to an Einzel lens.
The most common use of electron guns is in cathode ray tubes, which were
widely used in computer and television monitors. An electron gun can also
be used to ionize particles by adding or removing electrons from an atom.
This technology is sometimes used in mass spectrometry in a process called
ionization of electrons to ionize vaporized or gaseous particles
