My social justice issue is the history of LGBTQ+ rights in America.

“You Need to Calm Down” by Taylor Swift

Released in 2019 on the Album “You Need to Calm Down”

President Donald Trump coming out with anti LGBTQ+ bills and laws. The long standing fight
against rights for the LGBTQA community.

You Need to Calm Down communicates the oppression of these LGBTQ+ people. She talks
about everyone needing to either mind their own business or to be accepting.

Elements that stand out to get the message across: Setting, Character, Lyric.

How do the elements communicate the message? Setting: colors, trailer park, all neighbors,
togetherness. Character: all the different faces of the LGBTQ+ community. Lyric: talking about
their struggles or how to go about the situation.

What is more research I need to do? I need to do more current research on what is going on in
the world. Backlash on the community in American history. President's comments and bills
passed or not passed that benefit or do not benefit the community.
