EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This Document is a brief guideline for the Local Area Network (LAN) Infrastructure
requirement at The Westcoast Paper Mill Dandeli. The purpose of this document is to give
theWestcoast Paper Mill Dandeli a general guideline for implementing a LAN Infrastructure,
which will meet all the current and future Networking requirements.
The LAN implemented as per this proposed guideline will be a High Performance, Scalable,
Redundant and Secure Networking Infrastructure based on Open Network Standards. The
Network will also meet or exceed all the functional requirements of the proposed, and all
future, Information Technology implementations at Westcoast Paper Mill Dandeli.
This Document also briefs about Remote Access Solutions (RAS), which will help The
Westcoast Paper Mill Dandeli, to share information with Remote Users.

LOCAL AREA NETWORKING (LAN) TECHNOLOGY

The most widely deployed Local Area Network (LAN) Technology is based on
“ETHERNET”. Ethernet Standard is a specified by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers (IEEE 802.3). Ethernet uses the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision
Detection (CSMA/CD) protocol.
The available transmission speeds are 10Mbps, 100Mbps (Fast Ethernet), 1000Mbps
(Gigabit Ethernet) and 10G (10 Gigabit Ethernet). 10Mbps and 100Mbps are the common
Desktop transmission speeds and 1000Mbps and 10G is used at the Backbone and the
Core of the Network.
The transmission media used is special grade TP (Twisted Pair) Copper cable and Optical
Fiber cable. The Common Network Topology used for connectivity is the Star Topology.
LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN) ARCHITECTURE
The Local Area Network (LAN) Architecture ideally suited for The Westcoast Paper Mill
Dandeli is High Speed Ethernet on Enhance Category 5 and Optical Fibre Cable using the
Star Topology.
The Desktop Transmission Speed should be Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) with Server and
Backbone Connectivity on Gigabit Ethernet (1000Mbps).
The Cabling Media for this Network should be Enhanced Category 5 (Copper) cabling for
Desktop and Server Connectivity with the Backbone on Optical Fiber.
The Ethernet Switching Equipment for this Network should provide High Performance Non-
Blocking Distributed Switching Architecture with Quality of Service (QoS) and Robust
Security Features. The Switches should support Superior High Availability Features,
Advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 Functionality, Advanced QoS and Bandwidth Management,
Scalable Multicast Implementation, Comprehensive Network Management and Iron Clad
Security Features.

LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN) DESIGN

The Local Area Network Design for The Westcoast Paper Mill Dandeli should take the
following design criteria in to consideration:
 Centralized Design with a Core Switch and Access (Edge) Switches.
 Connectivity for the Servers, Routers and Backbone cables to be provided by the
Core Switch.
 The Core Switch should have high Availability and Redundancy features.
 Switch to Switch and Switch to Server Connectivity at 1 Gigabit (1000Mbps), Switch
to Desktop connectivity at 100 Mbps.
 Internal Backbones below 100 Meters in length can be on Enhanced Category 5
Copper UTP Cable.
 Optical Fibre should be used for Connectivity Links beyond 100 meters in length.
 Optical Fibre (Armoured) Cables should be used for External Cabling.
 Multimode Optical Fibre cable should be of 50-micron specifications.

SPECIFICATION FOR THE PASSIVE NETWORK (TRANSMISSION MEDIA)

The Network Cabling Infrastructure should meet all the specifications of International
Standards for Multimedia Communications.
The Twisted Pair (Copper) cable should meet or exceed the Enhanced Category 5
specifications (Class D) and should support Transmissions speeds of up to 1 Gigabit
(1000Mbps).
The Optical Fibre Cable should meet the ISO 11801 specifications and should support
transmissions speeds of up to 10G (10 Gigabit).
SPECIFICATION FOR THE ACTIVE NETWORK (ROUTERS, SWITCHES, ETC.)
The Ethernet Switches proposed for this Network should meet the following specifications.
 Non Blocking Architecture
 Wire Speed Switching Architecture under Full Load
 High Port Density and Scalability
 High Availability and Redundancy Features
 Advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 Features
 Rich QoS Features
 Multi Protocol Support
 Robust Security Features
 Comprehensive Management Features

NETWORK IMPLEMENTATION AND DOCUMENTATION

The Implementation and Documentation of the Network should be in accordance with
International Standards as specified by the ISO/IEC 11801:2nd Edition or AS/NZS 3080:2002.
This Standard Defines:
 Cabling topology and layout
 Cable types and their Performance requirements
 Outlet type and cable termination device performance requirements
 Designation and role of cross-connect points and equipment connection points
 Provisioning guide lines
 Wiring standardization (colour to pin and pin assignments)
 Maximum length of cable runs and patch cord lengths
 Installation requirements
 Performance criteria for testing to Class D (100MHz) and Class E (250 MHz)
 Administration (Identification and documentation) requirements
REMOTE ACCESS SOLUTIONS
Remote Access Solutions enable Authenticated User to access computers, files and other
resources from a remote distance (usually outside the LAN). The common Remote Access
Solutions are
 Direct Dial-In (using Dial-Up Connections),
 Dedicated Line (using Leased Lines) and
 Virtual Private Network - VPN based (using the Internet)
Remote Access Solutions ideally suited for The Westcoast Paper Mill Dandeli is a mix of
Leased line access and Internet based (VPN). The main concern when going in for Remote
Access Solutions is Security. A highly Secure Hardware and Software platform have to be
selected and implemented effectively.
