THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

A. Rationale and Background of the Study

Smartphone has become one the important devices used to simplify human lives and their

activities. The usage of smartphone has been increasing in recent years in Bangladesh. The

number of Smartphone users in Bangladesh has increased by 8.20 million in 2015 and the

figure will be more than doubled by 2021 (BTRC, 2016). In each year, more than 6.00

million new users are added to existing smartphone users (ERICSSON MOBILITY

REPORT, 2015). The smartphone is arguably the 21st century nuisance in CEBU,

Philippines. Everywhere nowadays, everyone are looking downward with their fingers

jumping on their phone’s screen. But then again, it’s not the smartphone but the user’s

problem. It is not good when smartphone use gets in the way of one’s otherwise

productive day. Only the number of apps on the phone limits the usefulness of the

smartphone. Lauren Slocum, at the website www.ranker.com, lists some of the coolest,

most impressive uses for the smartphone. These uses are mostly internet-based, which is

a major thing that is awesome about smartphone- it can use to surf the worldwide web.

According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer the smartphone addiction is highly increasing

especially in the year of 2018, with it the people’s addiction toward their smartphones is

inevitable.

Base on a studyhttps:www.verywellmind.com/how-do-smartphones-affect-the-brain-

sleep, and not because you are staying up late to check your email, scroll through your

Facebook newsfeed, or play a game of Trivia Crack. Instead, some sleep experts warn, it

is the type of light emitted from your mobile device’s screen that might just be messing

up your sleep-cycle, even after you turned off your device” so in short being with your

phone not just in day but also in night can affect to yourself.

THE PROBLEM

C. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM/STUDY

Smartphone addiction has been a cliché in today’s generation, seeing people who has not

have enough time to work because of addiction. They even tend to skip their meals

because of too much exposure to smartphones. The ratings of people addicted to

smartphones are getting higher and higher. Because of this, people are getting lazier and

all they do is just stick around with their phones and focus on the so-called online world

or virtual world. As we see how smartphone addiction effects on people, this made us as

researchers to come up this research. In making this, research is not just making

awareness to the people to control and limit their usage of phones yet it is also to

enlighten them and make them come back to reality that the fact, life isn’t just all about

having fun and gaining popularity but it is also in working and facing challenges in life

instead of getting one self into the virtual world.

In view of this, the researchers have decided to investigate these variables to know the

impact of smartphone addiction the Junior High School students especially the grade 10.
D. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The following individuals will be beneficial to the study:

Students: It will be much easier for them to understand the effects of smartphone

addiction towards academic performances, to make them realize that this type of

addiction might ruin their academic background. Because of this study, the students will

know how to control their addiction to different application in their smartphones.

Teachers: The teachers will be more aware of students getting addicted to their

smartphones, this research would help the teachers to identify their students if they are

addicted or not. It is also for them to know what lessons should be taught to their

students.

Parents: It is for the parents to be more aware that what things may affect if their child is

addicted to their smartphones. This research would help them on how to discipline their

children and limit them from using their phones.

School: They will be more aware of the effects of the students engaged in too much

addiction towards their smartphones that may ruin their academic performance. It will

help them implement programs and activities in school about controlling and limiting

students with their addiction towards their smartphones.

Government: The officials would be aware of the things that may affect to the students

within too much time spent on their smartphones. This research would be helping them to

know what should be done in solving this type of problem to avoid the students’ damage

their academic performances.

Community: People would be more aware of the stuffs that might affect if the students is

addicted to his/her phone. To make the people control their selves in using applications in

their smartphones.

Researchers: It will help them figure out if a student is addicted to his/her phone and how

today’s young people uses too much of their time for their phone. It is for them to know

the importance of the possible outcome that may affect to the student’s performances.
Future Researchers: They will be more aware of the possible outcomes that may result if

a student is addicted to his/her own phone. This research will help them continue and

make further research regarding this study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A. RELATED LITERATURE

Base on https://www.helpguide.org/articles/addictions/smartphone-addiction.htm/

Smartphone addiction, sometimes colloquially known as “monophobia” (fear of being

without a mobile phone), is often fueled by an Internet overuse problem or Internet

addiction disorder. After all, it is rarely the phone or tablets itself that creates the

compulsion, but rather the games, apps, and online worlds it connects us to.

Virtual relationships, addiction to social networking, dating apps, texting, and messaging

can extend to the point where virtual, online friends become more important than real-life

relationships. We have all seen the couples sitting together in a restaurant ignoring each

other and engaging with their smartphones instead. While the Internet can be a great

place to meet new people, reconnect with old friends, or even start romantic relationships,

online relationships are not a healthy substitute for real-life interactions. Online

friendships can be appealing, as they tend to exist in a bubble, not subject to the same

demands or stresses as messy, real-world relationships. Compulsive use of dating apps

can change your focus to short-term hookups instead of developing long-term

relationships.
B. RELATED STUDIES

Base on Seong-Soo Cha and Bo-Kyung Seo “The predictive factors of the smartphone

addiction in middle school students in South Korea. According to the Smartphone

Addiction Proneness Scale scores, 563 (30.9%) were classified as a risk group for

smartphone addiction and 1261 (69.1%) were identified as a normal user group”.

The adolescents used mobile messengers for the longest, followed by Internet surfing,

gaming, and social networking service use. The two groups showed significant

differences in smartphone use duration, awareness of game overuse, and purposes of

playing games.

The predictive factors of smartphone addiction were daily smartphone and social

networking service use duration, and the awareness of game overuse.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY

A. RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers used figures and diagrams like being in the flow chart they are using

Shapes to make the flow chart organized and be easy to understand to the one that is

being referred.

B. POPULATION AND SAMPLES

The population we have chosen is the Grade 10 students, for they are responsible and big

enough for most of the students in Grade 10 have smartphones. Related to the population

size we choose the purposive sampling for we cannot tell that whose student is addicted

enough to the smartphones.

C.RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

The researchers are using questionnaire to the respondents which are grade 10 students in

OPRRA National High School for them to know whom are considered as smartphone

addicts and for the respondents to be aware in what is being happened to them.

D.VALIDATION PROCEDURE

The researchers procedure in production for the respondents are finding the reasons why

they’re being addicted in smartphones, finding some strategies in coping up with their

addiction and conducting the research for them to have some basis and ideas to make the

thesis statement reliable and easy for them to understand what they’re doing.
E.DATA GATHERING STRUCTURE

In gathering data, the researchers used the sample technique purposive because some of

the students in Gr 10 doesn’t have phone and their won’t be a probability to be judge as

smartphone addict, and for those Gr 10 that has phone they are the one who is being

chosen to answer the questionnaire and gather data for the thesis.

F. DATA PROCESSING PROCEDURE AND STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF

DATA

The method that the researchers used in making statistical treatment of data first they

used the purposive for it is the sample that must be used in their problem and
