Analysis of a single-phase power system using Simpower Systems

blockset of Matlab/Simulink.
Objectives:
To learn/ visualize some of the basic concepts related to power flow in AC circuits.
Lab Tasks:

Simulate an RL circuit in MATLAB by joining a resistive branch in parallel with an inductive

branch. Attach voltage source to the RL branch. Perform the following tasks:

1. Display instantaneous load power (RL load) on scope.

2. Display instantaneous voltage after each transformer.
3. Display harmonic analysis of Input current with inductive load.
4. Display harmonic analysis of input current with non-linear load.

Theory:

Electrical power is the rate of consumption of electrical energy. The unit of power is Watt. The
power in Watts being absorbed by a load at any instant is the product of instantaneous voltage
drop across it in volts and instantaneous current into it in amperes. For a load with terminals ‘a’
and ‘n’; having terminal voltage and current given as:

van = Vmax cos (wt)

and

ian = Imax cos (wt – θ)

the instantaneous power is

p = van ian = Vmax Imax cos (wt) cos (wt – θ)

The angle θ is positive for lagging current and negative for leading current. A positive value of p
expresses the rate at which energy is being absorbed by the part of the system between the points
a and n. The instantaneous power is obviously positive when both van and ian are opposite in sign.
Positive power results when current is flowing in the direction of voltage drop and is the rate of
transfer of energy to the load. Conversely, negative power results when current is flowing in the

direction of voltage rise and means energy is being transferred from the load into the system to
which the load is connected. If van and ian are in phase, as they are in a purely resistive load, the
instantaneous power will never become negative. If the current and voltage are out of phase by
90°, as in a purely inductive or purely capacitive ideal circuit element, the instantaneous power
will have equal positive and negative half cycles and its average value will always be zero.

Observations and results:

As a home assignment student should attach the screen shots of results that are discussed in
above tasks. Please assign specific figure number with each result and discuss the graph and at
the end give your observation related to results and what you have learned in Lab.
