Volumetric Analysis

Also known as the geologist's method because it is based on geological

maps, Isopach maps are used to compute the bulk volume of the reservoir
(V). Core logs and analysis of wireline logs.
Reservoir Volume Calculations
To calculate the volumes it is necessary to find the areas between isopach
contours. There are several
methods:
1. Grid square counting
2. Plan meter
3. Digitizer table

Given the areas between contours, volumes can be computed using:

𝑎𝑜 𝑎𝑛
V= h ( + a1 + a2 + a3 + ….. an-1 + )

For an oil reservoir above the bubble point the oil-originally-in-place
(OOIP) is given by: OOIP = Reservoir Rock Volume (V)*Φ *(1-Sw)

The stock tank oil in place is given by: STOIP bbl = ;

Where FVF (or Bo) is the oil formation volume factor.

To calculate recoverable oil volumes, the OOIP must be multiplied by the
Recovery

Factor (fraction). Recoverable Oil bbl =
𝑭𝑽𝑭

The recovery factor ( R ) is one of the most important, yet the most difficult
variable to estimate. Fluid properties such as (FVF, Viscosity, API, GOR) all
influence the recovery factor. In addition, it is also a function of the reservoir
drive mechanism and the interaction between reservoir rock and the fluids in
the reservoir (permeability).
