at the beginning/ end of each class. Several times during the semester, each student will lead the
Darsdasheh. More instructions will be given in class.
Homework
You are expected to submit/hand in your homework on the due date announced or noted on the
syllabus. Late homework is ONLY accepted with an excused absence.
Since you will be doing a considerable amount of homework for this class, whether preparing for
activities, written or recorded assignments, or doing interactive drills online, this evaluation
criterion has the most points.
1. Assignments (20%):
You will be to asked to submit written or recorded assignments:
1. For essays and long writing assignments, you will get a chance to review mistakes and correct
them after an initial marking then to resubmit for a grade.
2. For some of the assignment, instructions will be given in due time.
3. Some announced assignments might change to accommodate your progress in class.
2. Book and online Preparation before class (10%):
Preparing for upcoming classes is essential to success in this course. Work and practice outside
of class should be done REGULARLY between class meetings rather than saved up for the
night before the test. Plan about 1.5- 2 hours to work on homework for EACH CREDIT HOUR
OF CLASS. Preparation before class is considered part of the homework, and is essential for
maximum benefit for this class. You are required to do drills in the book, work on activities at
home before class, or use the online component to prepare and practice before class.
The instructor will be checking textbooks to monitor work at home. If you wish not to write in
the textbook, you need to have a special notebook for textbook drills. In addition, using the
website is an essential part of the course, to practice listening to the dialogues, and to answer
interactive drills. Your instructor will monitor your progress on the website.
Refer to your syllabus for what to prepare for each class.
CourseWeb
I have created a CourseWeb site for this course where you may view the syllabus and
announcements, send emails to me or to your classmates, download course materials. All
communication from me to you is done through CourseWeb either with email, which uses only
Pitt email accounts, or as an announcement. Therefore, if you don’t use your Pitt account for
email, make sure you go to accounts.pitt.edu to forward your Pitt email to the one you are using.
** Please check course web before arriving to class for items that say “please print out”. I will
upload worksheet(s) that we will use in class and it is your responsibility to print out the sheet(s)
before coming to class. Printers are available in several locations on Pitt campus and in
computer labs.
Religious Holidays
If you need to miss class due to a religious holiday anytime during the semester, the university
requires that you let the instructor know about your planned absence as soon as possible.
Absence for religious holidays will not be held against you, and you will be allowed to make up
all work you miss due to your absence.
Special Needs
If you have a disability for which you are or may be requesting an accommodation, you are
encouraged to contact me and Disability Resources and Services, 216 William Pitt Union, (412)
648-7890 (voice) or (412) 383-7355 (TTY), as early as possible in the term. DRS will verify
your disability and determine reasonable accommodations for this course.
Academic Honesty
You are expected to do your own work and acknowledge use of anyone else’s work or ideas.
Academic dishonesty includes: (a) copying another student’s work or letting another student
copy your work and (b) copying passages or ideas from another source and passing them off as
your own, i.e. without properly referencing them. When scholastic dishonesty is suspected, I
will turn the matter over to the Provost’s Office for resolution. For more information see:
http://www.pitt.edu/~provost/aistudcode1.html
Study abroad
Hopefully you will want to further your language skills by studying abroad after taking thisclass.
Whether you are already actively planning to go, or think you might become interested after this
class, you are encouraged to attend an ‘Essentials’ session at the Study Abroad Office. This one-
time group orientation is the required introduction to the rather long process to go abroad at Pitt.
Plan on attending a session as early as possible, as the Study Abroad Office recommends that
you begin your study abroad process no later than one full academic term prior to your
anticipated departure. Schedule and online sign-up forms can be found at:
