Lesson Lesson: Discussing One’s Knowledge and Abilities


Outcomes At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
1) Make a statement to compare their knowledge of a subject matter with
someone else’s.
2) Demonstrate an activity that they have become skilled at.
3) Demonstrate to someone what they should or should not do.

LESSON PROCEDURE
Activity Description Length
Roll Call/ The scavenger hunt name call 5 mins
Opening Before class, the teacher hide the index cards of students’
finger-spelled names in the room. When the students come
in to the class, they have to find their name card and bring it
to the teacher. They finger spell their names to the teacher.
Review Review and discuss the Unit 10 quiz 5 mins

Directed Show signs for each vocabulary, ask how to sign/copy each
vocabulary

2) Students practice telling each other for next 2.5
minutes.
Teacher moves among students and assesses student work.
When done, teacher reviews the procedure, points out
common errors seen during guided practice and explains
how to do them correctly.
Independent Teacher passes out the handouts of the subjects — (MATH, 10 mins
Practice PSYCHOLOGY, LAW, POLITICS, COUNSELING,
HISTORY, INTERPRETING, DEAF STUDIES) and ask
them to tape the paper on their partner’s back. The students
are to socialize with each other, asking if their major is the
correct subject (e.g., MATH) taped on their backs and to
find other students who has the same major (e.g., MATH)
Then students discuss with each other about their majors on
their knowledgeable and abilities.
Cultural Return to their seats. Explain to students that, deaf students 10 mins
Application in deaf culture tend to discuss about others’ majors or
interests at their schools and compare their knowledge/
abilities.
Closure Quickly ask students to share what they’ve learned during 5 mins
class. Explain upcoming assignment. Answer questions.
Dismiss class.
Assessment Informal: During paired and group activities, use informal N/A
assessment techniques such as asking to repeat, observe,
show puzzled-face, praise, rephrase, nod, recast, clarify,
expand, skimp, etc.
Formal: Submit 1 - 2 minutes video via FlipGrid and follow
this sequence:
name two classes students are taking
describe one activity they are not good at
Must include adjectives & adverbs. Evaluate using a rubric
(attached).
