Abstract

My playlist, Rainbow Road, includes 4 songs. These 4 songs are “48” by Tyler, The

Creator ft. Frank Ocean, “Crack Rock” by Frank Ocean, “Carmen” by Lana Del Rey, and “Self

Care” by Mac Miller. Each of these songs discuss a constant view of overcoming or accepting

certain aspects of life that many people would never speak about, this includes drug addiction

and accepting your sexuality. Both, “48” by Tyler, The Creator and “Crack Rock” by Frank

Ocean speak about drug addiction, possibly crack cocaine, and how it ruins lives with people

they love. “Carmen” by Lana Del Rey is about her struggles with alcohol addiction, symbolized

in the persona of Carmen, and the way highs feel from drugs that are taking over her life. “Self

Care” by Mac Miller is about Miller’s struggles with addiction and helps spread a message about

controlling yourself in tempting situations. This playlist plays a role in Abdurraqib’s vision of a

new patriot because through these songs I have created a persona of someone who is not scared

of what society thinks and is openly speaking about problems in their life and society which are

in need of light. These songs enlighten the listener on the intricate world of drug and alcohol

addiction and the people who compose it, ranging from many different races and genders.
