Review

The importance of Being Earnest is the most famous and original work by Oscar
Wilde. In this play he tried to depict the irony about the institutions of marriage
which happened in ages of queen Victoria reign. It was important for upper-class
society to be seen by immense wealth which was passed on from generation to
generation. Thus, Wilde calls them “serious”. The word “Trivial” means “unserious”
or “lacking importance”. Taking this into account, Wilde probably wants to say that
the play has nothing to do with serious.
The play revolves around the story of two men Algy and Jack. Besides, there are
two different stages which the play took place, London and Scotland. Ironically,
there is no character (initially) named “Ernest”, but everything depends on
pretending to be Ernest. That name was considered appropriated for any honest
man established by society, and his girlfriends were obsessed with it. Both
Gwendolen and Cecily are in love with that name. On the one hand they both are
engaged with that same name, on the other, Ernest doesn’t even exist, but is being
impersonated by two different guys.
Finally, things start to reveal. Both Jack and Algy are finally being Earnest, but they
can’t take credit for the events that happened. When Jack’s identity is revealed, he
still doesn’t know what his real name was. But then he finds out that it is Ernest the
entire time.
To conclude, it is said bye Jack He had realised for the first time in his life the vital
importance of being Earnest, meaning by this was something ambiguous.
