Reading [20 Marks]
Q 1. Read the passage carefully. [8]
Swami Vivekananda is known for his inspiring speech at the Parliament of the world’s religions at Chicago
on 11 September, 1893, where he introduced Hindu philosophy to the West. But this was not the only
contribution of the saint. He revealed the true foundation of India’s unity as a nation.
He taught how a nation with such a vast diversity can be bound together by a feeling of humanity and
brotherhood. Vivekananda emphasised the points of drawbacks of western culture and the contribution of
India to overcome those. Freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose once said: “Swamiji Harmonised
the East and West, religion and science, past and present. Our countrymen have gained unprecedented self-
respect, self-reliance and self-assertion from his teachings.” Vivekananda was successful in constructing a
virtual bridge between the culture of East and West.
He interpreted the Hindu scriptures, philosophy and the way of life to the western people. He made them
realise that inspite of poverty and backwardness, India has a great contribution to make to world culture. He
played a key role in ending India’s culture isolation from the rest of the world.
He was also associated.with Brahmo Movement led by Keshab Chandra Sen, for sometimes.
He also questioned the validity of superstitious customs and discrimination based on caste and religion.
During this spiritual crisis, Vivekananda first heard about Sri Rama Krishna from William Hastie, the
Principal of the Scottish Church College. One day in November 1881, Vivekananda went to Kali Temple in
Dhakshineshwar where Sri Ramakrishna was staying. He straightaway asked the Ramakrishna, “Sir, have
you seen God?” Without a moment hesitation, Sri Ramakrishna replied : “Yes, I have seen. I see him as
clearly as I see you, only in much deeper sense. “Vivekananda was surprised to hear it. Sri Ramakrishna
won him over through his pure, unselfish love. Vivekananda started visiting Dhakshineshwar frequently and
the relationship of “Master and disciple” developed between the two.

Sub: Complaint against noisy neighbours
Dear Respeced Sir/Madam,
I am writing to complain about my noisy neighbours. They stay at 9, Janak Apartments. They usually make
noise from late night till the early hours of the morning. This disturbs the peace and quiet of the night and
disturb the sleep of the neighbourhood people. The noisy people are a family of four. The father of the
family. Mr. Arora. usually comes home at about 11 p.m. and is drunk and abusive at this time. As he is not
in a sober state, he often hits his car against his house gate. This makes a lot of noise. It is also dangerous for
the safety of his next door neighbours. My family lives on the left side of his house. The Mishra family lives
on the right side. We worry about our house gates being smashed by him any night.
Mr. Arora is constantly having fights with his wife. There have been family altercations in the past during
which pans and sharp weapons were thrown at each other. This usually happens from past midnight till
morning. It is driving the neighbours crazy. His son and daughter frequently hold parties with their friends.
Last month, the parties were held every weekend. The music was unbearable as they played it very loudly.
They show scant regard for their neighbours and little children who need to sleep early.
We have come to a breaking point of our endurance. So we are making a formal complaint so that you take
action against these noisy neighbours. We would appreciate an immediate action to he initiated by you for
the respite of all.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Ritivik/Rituja

Sub: Abolishing Capital Punishment
Respected Sir/Madam,
The world has made big strides in science and technology. However the legal system in India has its roots
still in the colonial penal codes. Unfortunately, the barbaric practices of ‘blood for blood’ still continue in
the form of capital punishment. We still have not come out of the middle ages. Hence, the barbaric practice
of awarding the capital punishment still continues in India and some other countries of the world.
If the state can’t grant life to anyone, how can it take away the life of a person? Natural law doesn’t approve
of such barbaric and inhuman practices. Secondly, the aim of punishing a person for the crime he has
committed is to reform him or her but capital punishment doesn’t leave any scope for reformative chances.
Thirdly, birth and death are natural processes and can’t he terminated by the arbitrary will of the state. The
state should not take away the right of redemption of an individual by sealing his fate forever. A civilised
and humane society must have civilised and human laws. There should be no place for any traces of barbaric
practices of the middle ages in the modern world. I hope this message will touch the conscience of
thousands through the columns of your esteemed daily.
Yours faithfully,
Arushi/Aman

Adventure of Riding a Cycle [10 Marks]
I am very fond of cycling. Rain attracts me a lot. I am besides myself with joy when it rains.I get a chance to
go on my cycle ride. On the second Saturday of last September our school was closed. The monsoon had
already touched my town. When I got up in the morning, I found the sky was still dark and cloudy. The
gusty wind was adding thrills to the weather . Father was about to go to his office and so he asked me to go
with him to the nearest market and bring some medicines for my granny who was not feeling well.
Considering the weather, I immediately agreed to go provided I was allowed to take my bicycle which was
about 20 days old. Though my mother hesitated to allow me the privilege of my bicycle I succeeded in
persuading my father. My father asked me to go ahead of him and wait at chemist’s shop. I did the same. He
came, gave me medicines and left for his office. I was a free bird now and it also began to rain. I took the
medicine bag and took my favourite route to come back home.
The path that I took boasts of many twists, ups and slopes which made my ride romantic. On a slope I rode
my bicycle at the maximum speed and as a result my happiness was short lived.
I slipped into a road side ditch and fractured my hand. Although I am well now my parents are still
apprehensive about allowing me to ride my bicycle on busy roads. I am anxious to regain their confidence. It
will now take some time to change their opinion. I am afraid I’ll to miss my bicycle and its beautiful ride in
upcoming monsoon season.

Snatching Thieves [10 Marks]
It was lunch time in the city. Mamta and two of her colleagues left their office and walked towards their
favourite restaurant a short distance away. Mamta had a handbag slung over her shoulder. At a crossing,
they waited for the traffic light to turn green. When it did, Mamta, her colleagues and many other people
crossed over to the other side of the road. Suddenly from the traffic that had stopped at the crossing, a
motorcycle leapt forward. Two men were on it.
In a flash, they were beside Mamta. The person riding pillion grabbed her handbag. The force of the
snatcher sent Mamta tumbling to the ground. The strap of the purse broke and the pillion rider had the
handbag in his hand. The rider turned the throtde and the motorcycle sped off down the road, weaving
between other vehicles in their rush to get away. Fortune did not favour the thieves. A few seconds later,
they crashed into a tanker in the middle of the road. The two men were sent flying, hitting other vehicles
before falling on the road. They lay motionless. The whole sequence of events occurred in less than fifteen
seconds. In that time, two distracted drivers crashed into the vehicles in front of them. Finally all traffic
stopped. Some men rushed to the thieves and pulled them to the roadside. Mamta was badly shaken by the
whole incident. She had some cuts and bruises on her body. Otherwise she was all right

OR
The bus journey was long awaited and a fascinating one for Valli. Recount a similar journey made by you. A
journey that will always remain in your memory.
Answer:
Natalya and Lomov fought over the superiority of their dogs-Squeezer and Guess. Lomov was pained to
hear that despite many qualities, Guess had two major defects, i.e.. the dog was old as well as short in the
muzzle. Lomov was proud of his dog’s pure breed, its well sprung ribs. It was also a good hunter. On the
other hand. Natalya’s high pedigree-squeezer was a bad hunter. She pointed out that her dog. Squeezer was
better than Guess. She remarked that Guess was old, ugly and a worn out cab horse. She also called Guess a
lame dog. Then Lomov stated that his dog had become lame since its leg had been bitten by some other dog.
Though Lomov had come there to propose to Natalya as he wanted to marry her, they involved themselves
in silly arguments-that also over petty issues. Their main purpose was sidelined in the dispute. But such silly
arguments should never come in the way of matrimony. Rather it is the attribute of tolerance and acceptance
that paves the way to good relationships.

A journey becomes memorable not only in reaching the destination but also in the small enjoyable moments
that go with it. The yearn to travel marks the beginning of your journey just like Valli who had a longing to
take up the bus iournev for which she had saved money bit hv bit. Out of all the journeys we take in life
some are etched in our minds for special reasons.
I had one such experience. The memory of this journey continues to give pleasure to my mind even after
several years. My first travel in a train came when I went to visit my aunt who lives in Kolkata. I had never
travelled by a train and I had a long wish to do so. I had finally got the opportunity and that too I was to
travel alone. On the day of the departure I was butterflies in my stomach as was excited to the brim. The
train reservation was done by my dad.The train departed at 10 a.m. Luck was with me and I got the window
seat. I enjoyed the passing scenery. The sights of numerous rivers, bridges. Countryside, evergreen paddy
fields, lush green tea gardens, vast plains, etc, kept me enchanted. I was also lucky with my co-passengers
who were a bunch of college students. They were a friendly bunch and their lively conversation and witty
jokes kept me happy We exchanged tasty snacks and food. It was like a bonus to me. The journey seemed
swift and interesting. When we arrived at our destination we exchanged our mail ids and phone numbers.I
have till date kept in touch with them.I have now come to the conclusion that a journey by train is among the
most enjoyable journeys. This has remained the most memorable journey of my life. [8]
Q 11. Answer the following question in 100-150 words. [8]
Presence of mind and intelligence are more powerful than a gun. How far is it true in case of Ausable, the
secret agent? [100-150 words]
OR
Many of us don’t get what we deserve in life. With reference to the lesson ‘A Question of Trust’ do you
think Horace Danby was unfairly punished or did he deserve what he got? [100-150 words]
Answer:
A good spy need not be handsome, attractive and smart. Physical strength can be additional advantage but
certainly not the essential one. Secret agents have to face critical situations at every step. One night, Ausable
found Max in his room. There was an automatic pistol in his hand. He had come there to take the report
(concerning some new missiles) from Ausable.
Max was also a secret agent of another organisation. Ausable was not the least afraid of Max’s presence. He
thought of a clever trick. He convinced Max about a balcony outside the window. Just then there was a loud
knock at the door. Ausable told Max that it was police to provide hint security. Max had no time to think.
Max rushed towards the window and dropped to the non-existent balcony and met his tragic end. Amusable
did not use physical strength. He won over the critical situation by his sheer presence of mind. [8]
OR
According to me, Horace Danby was not a hard core thief. He stole because he loved to read and he only
robbed rich people. He wanted only to buy good and expensive books to read. He was otherwise a nice and
respectable man. But in spite of all these good qualities A thief is a thief no matter what the purpose is, how
much the amount is and whoever the person being robbed is. What a thief does with his booty is secondary
to his crime. In the eyes of law he is a criminal who has to be punished. It was inevitable that he would get
caught one day even if the Lady in Red had not fooled him. A crime has to be seen as a crime and no other
hue can be given to it. Even if no one is harmed in the crime still the , criminal has to be nabbed and
punished. So, Horace deserved what he got. [8]
