16 2: Selected Bhagavad-gita Verses TEXT 3.9 FAAS AT CESS BHT: | aed at Ada AAR: SAAT 118 yajfidrthat karmano ’nyatra loko ’yam karma-bandhanah tad-artham karma kaunteya mukta-sarigah samacara yajfia-arthat—done only for the sake of Yajiia, or Visnu; karmanah—than work; anyatra—otherwise; lokah—world; ayam—this; karma-bandhanah—bondage by work; tat—of Him; artham—for the sake; karma—work; kaunteya—O son of Kunti; mukta-sangah—iiberated from association; samdcara—do per- fectly. TRANSLATION Work done as a sacrifice for Visnu has to be performed, otherwise work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain free from bondage. A person who works for his own be Pi is own benefit is always in anxiety. But a devotee who works for Visnu remains happy and free from karmic reactions. 18 2: Selected Bhagavad-giti Verses EXPLANATION ‘We all have to work just to keep our body alive. But, if we work for our own satisfaction, that gives us karmic reactions, good or bad. If we work for Vignu, called yajtta or sacrifice in this verse, then our work will not have material reactions. We will be liberated when we work for Visnu. This is called the art of work. In the beginning, we should learn how to work for Visnu from Krsna Himself, as Arjuna did, or from Krsna’s devotee. 39 Work done as a sacrifice for Vian has to be
