Speaking Test Format

Service Advisers

There are three parts to the speaking test.

Part I is the preliminaries where we ask simple questions that will make them more comfortable in
the test. This is also the part where their grammatical knowledge is noted.

Part II is the section about their job. They are asked what the job of a service adviser is and talk
about other things related to cars (e.g. car problems, car maintenance, etc.) This section will check
their Vocabulary.

Part III is the Conversation section where they are paired with a student and act out a conversation.
This will check their Pronunciation skills.

Part I Preliminaries (2-3 mins) Choose 3-4 from the list


 What is your name? Where do you live? How old are you?
 Do you have any brothers or sisters? What do they do?
 What does your father do?
 What do you like doing on the weekends?
 What is your favorite colour? Why?
 Tell me something about yourself. (If chosen, only ask one more question)
 Do you have any plans this weekend?
 What did you do last night?

Part II Job (3-4 mins) Choose 3-4 from the list


 What are you studying in TATI now?
 What is your job now?
 What does a Service Adviser do?
 Can you give me two (2) common problems of cars?
 What is the cause/reason for the problem(s)?
 What do you do when the customer comes in?
 What information do you get from the customer?

Part III Conversation (2-3 mins.) The student will be paired with another student.

A: May I speak to Mr. Al Harthi?


B: Yes, speaking.
A: This is (name of student) from OTE. I’m calling about your car.

B: Oh yes. Is there a problem?


A: Well…yes. There is a problem with the brake pads.
They need to be replaced right away.

B: Okay. How much does it cost?


A: It costs 25 O.R to change them.

B: OK. When can I pick it up?


A: You can pick it up at 4.30.

B: That’s okay.
A: Great! Thank you for your time and see you at 4.30 pm!

This is the end of the test.
