Date: 2/3/2020 Class: 6th grade AIM Unit: Science

LESSON TOPIC: The Rock Cycle, 3 Main Types of Rocks

Lesson Goals:
Student will need to understand the Rock Cycle and 3 major rock
classification of rocks to give them a foundation to study geologic history
and plate tectonics for grade 7 and 8.

LEARNING Students will be able to differentiate and understand the three rock
OBJECTIVES: classifications and how to tell them apart based on their texture and
composition. The student will be able to explain the rock cycle and how
it works.

TEKS: 6.1(A);(C);(E); 6.3(B); 6.10(B) – Classify Rocks as metamorphic,

igneous, or sedimentary by processes of their formation.

ACADEMIC Rock Cycle, Texture, Composition, Minerals, Grains, Igneous Rock,

LANGUAGE: Sedimentary Rock, Metamorphic Rock, Magma, Lava
MINI-LESSON: Beginning of lesson: Students will watch short music video about the Rock Cycle,
which is a review from past learning periods. After the video, I will provide time
for students to ask lingering questions and to determine what areas needs more
focus prior to beginning our activity.

MAIN
ACTIVITY: Students will be creating an informative poster on one of the three rock
classifications in groups of two. I will have made my own poster of Igneous Rock
to show students what is expected of them. Students can use my poster as a
reference when drafting and creating their posters. Students will have printed
pre-cut facts and definitions that they must determine matches their chosen rock.
Students will be able to use their notes from previous learning periods, their
textbook, handouts and internet. They will be able to print out examples,
descriptions and pictures of their rocks and/or how the rocks are created.

CLOSING:
Students will present their informative posters to their peers. Each student in the
audience will need to ask at least one question to the presenting group.

ASSESSMENT: Each student that is presenting will be expected to fluently answer questions
from their audience (peers). A grading rubric will be provided to all students to
help them determine if they reached each activity goal.
