• Proper vehicle selection is imperative to ensure that each vehicle supplied can fulfil its
prescribed role in the overall transportation operation. Many different vehicle makes,
models and options are available.

• Vehicles may be grouped into four main categories:

1.Official
2.Light Field
3.Heavy Duty
4.Special Purpose
Equipment Selection

• Continuous Type : Continuous transport of material without


stopping for its takeover and disposal.

• Cyclic Type: Transfer of materials in working cycles (loading,


unloading etc.)
Fleet Management

• Fleet management is an administrative approach that allows companies to organize and


coordinate work vehicles with the aim to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and provide
compliance with government regulations.

• While most commonly used for vehicle tracking, fleet management includes following
and recording mechanical diagnostics and driver behaviour.

• Fleet management is used by couriers, oil and gas delivery, utilities, repair and service
industry businesses to ensure responsible vehicle use, confirm safety and enable real-
time tracking.

Repair & Maintenance

Vehicles are regularly maintained for optimum performance, and kept in good repair. In
emergency situations the Logistician is sometimes tasked with the responsibility of
managing the vehicle fleet.

To streamline vehicle management the FM should put in place a simple process. Such a
process could entail the following:

1. In house maintenance
2. Outsourced maintenance
3. Contract hire
4. Preventive maintenance
5. Routine maintenance
Lifecycle Management

• Lifecycle management involves managing all the various expenses (and revenue)
components involved in providing and operating a vehicle throughout its operational
life.

• Lifecycle cost elements include acquisition, license, insurance, fuel, maintenance,


repair, salvage, debt expense, administration, accidents, inventory, and downtime.

• All too often companies ignore the expense of lifecycle cost elements which results in
utilising equipment for a lot longer than they should.

• Not adhering to lifecycle management may lead to decrease in productivity.
