What will I learn about this semester?

- Natural Selection & Evolution
- The Biology of Cancer
- Viruses & Vaccines
- The Positives of Bacteria
- Food Safety & GMOs
- MORE Biotech Lab Techniques!

What are the classroom expectations/rules?

During the semester, you will work and think like scientists, making sense of challenging scientific phenomena inside the
lab and classroom. Because you will be working with up-to-date biotechnology equipment and hazardous lab materials,
you are expected to conduct yourself in a safe and professional manner at all times. Lab procedures must be followed as
outlined in your SOPs and/or Composition Notebook Methods sections. The field of science is driven by the collaboration
of motivated individuals. In this class, you will work respectfully with others and share your ideas, knowledge, and
experience.
Ms. M’s Rules for Classroom Behavior:
1. Respect
2. Effort
3. Safety
Ms. M’s Rewards & Consequences:
Your hard work and respectful behavior will not go However, we are all human and make mistakes on
unnoticed in this class. Beyond completing work on time, occasion. When classroom expectations and/or rules are
achieving higher grades on assignments, and working consistently not followed, these behaviors will receive
collaboratively with other students, positive behaviors in consequences like the following:
class will be rewarded with: - Verbal warnings
- Verbal praise - Lunch detention
- Positive phone calls home - Removal from labs/activities (which will need to
- Bonus points for going above & beyond be completed on your own time)
- Mini Toy Dinosaurs! - Referral and/or phone call home

What are the classroom procedures in this class?

Ms. M’s Beginning & End of Class Procedures:
When you get to class, a Bellwork will be projected on the board, which you will respond to and complete on your
Bellwork & Closure Weekly Handout. Ms. M will walk around stamping the Handout of students who are silently
working on the Bellwork. On non-lab days, a Closure will be projected on the board, which you will respond to in a
similar fashion as the Bellwork, receiving a stamp if working silently and being dismissed by Ms. M after the bell rings.
The stamps on your Bellwork & Closure Weekly Handout will be checked and graded by Ms. M at the end of the week (1
point per stamp). On lab days, your lab table will need to be cleaned up and checked by Ms. M before you can be
dismissed from class for the day.
Ms. M’s Absence & Tardy Policy:
If you are absent, you can find missing work from the day you missed in the Intro Biotech Absent Board folders in the
back of the Classroom. Take the handout(s) in the folder if there are any, write down the checked items explaining what
we did that day in your Bellwork space, and show Ms. M for a stamp. You are considered Tardy if you show up to class
after the second bell rings. If this happens, sign in at the back of the room in the Tardy Folder and place any passes you
have on Ms. M’s keyboard, so she doesn’t mark you absent. Get started on Bellwork right away!
Ms. M’s Cell Phone Policy:
The Flowing Well High School Science Department is implementing a new Cell Phone Policy for the 2019-2020 school
year. During class, cell phones should only be out of backpacks when the teacher instructs students to use them for a
specific learning purpose. Technology is an essential part of scientific industries and everyday life inside and outside of
the classroom. However, inappropriate use of cell phones during class, will result in one warning by the teacher, followed
by a referral to the office. This may be a challenge for some, so we will work together to figure out the appropriate times
to use technology in the classroom.
Ms. M’s “Can I Go To The Bathroom?” Policy:
Because we are all responsible and mature scientists, you are allowed to leave the classroom at your own discretion as
long as the teacher is not teaching/talking to the class. If you are working with a group, you should also check with your
group members to see if you can leave or if you need to stay for an important task. When you leave, sign out by writing
your name and the time on the mini white board next to the back door and take the pass. Try and keep your out-of-the-
classroom breaks to less than 5 minutes, because you don’t want to miss too much science. :)

How will my effort and work be graded?

If you show up and work hard every day, all assignments can be completed during class. All assignments (Including the
Bellwork & Closure Weekly Handouts) will be worth 10 points. Semester Finals are worth 20% of your final grade.

How can I be successful this semester?

Tips for Success in Biotechnology:
1. Show up, work hard, make mistakes, learn, make some more mistakes, work harder, never give up!
2. “Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle.” – There may be times you struggle in
this class (and in life!), but at long as you put the effort in to get better/stronger/smarter every day, you are on the
right path.
3. “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” – Scientists fail EVERYDAY!
We learn the most from our mistakes. Although it might seem uncomfortable at first, try and look at your
mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.
4. And finally…If you have a question, ASK! Never let anything silence your curiosity for more knowledge. 😊

Ms. M’s Message to Parents/Guardians:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I am very excited to have your child as a student for another semester of Intro Biotechnology. I am currently in
a program to receive my Masters in Education through the University of Arizona. This semester I will be taking
the lead teacher role, so if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.
(contact info on front page) I am looking forward to teaching these students and helping them work and think
like scientists every day!
Sincerely,
Ms. Kerri Marquardt
