Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Representation; Expression; and Engagement
BrainPOP supports UDL:
- Supports ELL students with changing the language to their native language
- Visuals and Audio for the different learners
- Students can take a quiz for their comprehension.
- It supports all learning types.
- Students can watch the video as many times as they need to.
A Skit supports UDL:
- Children have choices on how they want to perform the skit.
- Children are engaged in the topic.
- It can be visual or a video that is played.
- Students will be able to express their feelings through the characters.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will go over characters in different books or stories. They will watch the video on BrainPOP
about characters. Students will then be put into groups. They will be assigned a book. The books will be
Because of Winn-Dixie, Charlotte’s Web, Judy Blume, and James and the Giant Peach.
Once the video is over and each group has been assigned a book, they will read together over a few days.
They will then learn all about the characters and the characters feelings. They also will focus on how the
characters act throughout the book and in the different situations.
The students will then work as a group to create a skit that shows the characters, their feelings, and their
actions. After they have created the play, they will have the choice to perform the play to the class, or they
can video the play. If they choose to video the skit, they will use iMovie and the video will play for the class.
Lastly, to show what they know, the students will have a discussion and take notes during the skits. The
goal is to be able to point out the characters, their feelings, and actions throughout the skit.

Reflective Practice:
To extend this lesson, I might require all students to make a video about the characters whether they perform
a skit on the video or make a PowerPoint about the different character. This would make it a high LoTi level.
Another activity I could do to extend this lesson would be to show a movie of a book, and they would have to
discuss and make a PowerPoint about the different characters, their feelings, and how they play a role in the
different parts of the movie.
