HOW CAN YOU PROVE YOUR ANSWER?
What is Percent Change? (COPY!)
a ratio that compares the change in a quantity to the original amount.

Percent Increase Percent Decrease

When the new amount is greater
When the new amount is less
than the original amount
than the original amount
Example: Markups in a store
A storeowner bought a shirt for
Example: Discounts in a store
$4.00 and sold it for $20.00. What A shirt originally cost $60 is now on
percent was the markup? sale for $42. What was the percent
discount?
How do you find Percent Change? (COPY!)
In percent change situations, there are 4 numbers to pay attention to
1. Original Amount: The starting value before the change
2. New Amount: The ending value after the change
3. Amount of Change: The difference between the old and new
amounts (subtract them!)
4. Percent Change: The difference divided by the original amount.
a. If it went up: Percent Increase
b. If it had gone down: percent decrease

Method 1: Proportions Method 2: Equation

Percent Increase Example (COPY!)
A store owner bought a shirt for $4.00 and sold it for
$20.00. What percent was the markup?

Or
1) Find the Change: 1) Find the Change:
20 - 4 = 16 20 - 4 = 16
2) Set up Proportion:
2) Divide change by original:
Change -->
16 = x .
16/4 = 4
Original --> 4 100 3) Turn into a percent:
4 x 100 = 400% increase
3) Solve: 16(100) = 4x
1600 = 4x
400 = x
The price was marked up by 400%
Percent Decrease Example (COPY!)
A shirt originally cost $60 is now on sale for $42.
What was the percent discount?
1) Find the Change: 1) Find the Change:
Or
60 - 42 = 18
60 - 42 = 18
2) Set up Proportion:
2) Divide change by original:
Change -->
18 = x .
18 / 60 = 0.3
Original --> 60 100 3) Turn into a percent:
0.3 x 100 = 30% decrease
3) Solve: 18(100) = 60x
1800 = 60x
30 = x
The price was decreased by 30%
Now look at the next examples on the
next 4 slides. Try to answer on your
own and understand what is
happening...
Ex 1) The Mitchell family bought a house several years ago for $120,000.
This year, they sold it for $150,000. Find the percent of increase in the
price of the house.

A percent of increase is a
percent of change.
● Subtract the house values
to find the amount of
change.
● Use the original price of
120,000
● Set up the proportion
● Solve
The price of the house increased by 25%.
Ex 2) Mercer Middle School had 240 students last year. This year, there are
192 students enrolled. Find the percent of change in the number of students.
Is this a percent increase or a percent decrease?

The percent of change is a

percent of decrease.

● Subtract the number of students

to find the amount of change.
● Use the earlier number of
students as the original amount.
● Set up proportion
● Solve

The number of students decreased by 20%.

Ex 3) The average speed of the winning race cars in
the Indy 500 are shown in the table. Find the
percent of change in speed from 1955 to 2010.
Round your answer to the nearest whole percent.
The percent of change is a
percent of increase.
● Subtract the speeds between
1955 and 2010 to find the
amount of change.
● Use the average speed from
1955 as the original amount.
● Set up proportion
● Solve
The average speed increased by approximately 27%.
Example 4:
A percent of change tells how much a quantity has
increased or decreased relative to the original amount.

Movie tickets used to cost $5, now cost $7.

Find the percent of change.
