Unit 2: Imperialism – Political Cartoon Assessment

Due: Monday, February 3, 2020

Goal: The goal of this assignment is to assess your understanding of the Age of Imperialism in Europe through
the creation of a political cartoon, similar to the ones we have been analyzing in class.

Timeline: This assignment will consist of 1 in-class “work day” used for brainstorming and creation of the
elements of the assignment detailed below. This assignment is due on Monday, February 3, 2020 at the
beginning of the class period.

Part I: Political Cartoon


Your political cartoon should portray one or more of the following:
The division/colonization of land by Imperialist Nations
The quest for Raw Materials and New Markets
One of the effects of colonization/Imperialism presented during classmate presentations
§ Loss of land
§ Loss of rights
§ Technological improvements
§ Medical Advancements
§ Forced labor
§ Tribal division of Africa

Your political cartoon should be:


Titled (give your cartoon a title relevant to the message you are trying to portray.)
Neat and clean
Colorful
Easily understood
Free of offensive language and/or stereotypes
Free of lengthy sentences and/or word clusters (text is welcomed, but it should not take over the
cartoon)

Part II: Explanation


Your explanation should be handwritten on a lined sheet of paper and stapled to the back of your political
cartoon before turning in.

Your explanation should be 8-9 sentences and should:


Explain the intended meaning of your political cartoon
Describe the placement, exaggeration, analogy etc. within the cartoon and why you chose to include
them.
Describe the aspect of Imperialism that it is portraying.
Explain whether your cartoon is in favor of Imperialism or not. Why? How?
