Course: 7th Grade Math DETAIL LESSON PLAN

Thursday, March 29 / Friday, March 30

Student Objective
(Obj. 5a, 5c) TSW… create and analyze frequency tables and histograms based on a set of data.

Lesson
11-1 Frequency Tables and Histograms (Textbook Pages: 532-536)

Resources
Think Map  Tree Map (Types of graphs)

Homework
Data Analysis test next class. Complete study guide.

Last Night’s Homework

Complete line graph / scatter plot classwork for homework. (Buckledown and MCT practice sheets)

Bellwork
Pass out notes on circle graphs. Have students work through you-try problem and college preference activity..

Prior Knowledge
 This nine weeks, we have learned a lot about different ways we can analyze data. Box-and-whisker plots, circle graphs, line graphs,
and scatter plots to name just a few.

Anticipatory Set
 TODAY we are going to look at 2 other types of graphs: Frequency Tables and Histograms
 Show Tree Map showing characteristics of different types of graphs learned so far. Include frequency table and histogram.
 Why would you want to represent data in a Frequency Table or Histogram?
 Well, last year I was interested in trying to find out how many of my students were pet lovers like Parris Hilton and Miley Cyrus.
 Here’s what I found out… (Display transparency “Pet Lovers”)

Teacher Input
 Pass out Student Notes.
 Explain what a frequency table is and why they are used.

 Explain what a histogram is and why they are used.
 Guide students through example on student notes.
 Have students work you-try problems (independently).

 Classwork: Study guide

Extra practice: BD-165 (Freq. Tbl, Histogram) with partner

Assessment
Question the students for understanding. Monitor students as they work on classwork. Data Analysis test next class.

Closure
We have covered quite a few types of graphs used for data analysis.
1. Which table records with tally marks how often an item occurs? Frequency Table
2. Which table is a bar graph that can be used to illustrate the frequency that an item occurs? Histogram
3. Which graph is used to shows parts of a whole? Circle Graphs
4. Which graph is used to show a relationship between two things? Scatter Plots
5. Which graph is good to use when showing data over a period of time? Line Graphs
6. What methods did we use in class to help us find the center of our data? Mean, Median, Mode

Frequency Tables

Definition

 It is a table that lists each item in a data set and the number of times each item occurs.

 Tally marks are used to keep track of how many times an item occurs.

Example

Mrs. Berg asked 18 students in her class… “How many pets do you own?”

Responses: 0, 4, 2, 1, 6, 2, 0, 1, 2, 6, 3, 2, 4, 1, 7, 2, 2, 8

Histograms

Definition
 It is a bar graph that can be used to illustrate the frequency of a set of data.

 The height of each bar shows the frequency of data within that interval.
(Note: There are no spaces between the bars on a histogram)

Let’s use the frequency table from Mrs. Berg’s Pet survey to create a Histogram:
