Topic:The Portrayal of Women in Misogynistic songs

CHAPTER 1

Introduction (Background of the study)

Does culture affect music or music affects culture?

Music is an expressive language of culture. It relates to a variety of issues,

including inequality, identity, discrimination, politics, and issues in society. It reflects
a person's perspective, culture, beliefs, feelings, and intentions. Sociologists and
psychologists have been able to determine that music plays a crucial factor in one’s
behavior and upbringing (Clark and Giacomantonio, 2015). Music can revolutionize
not just a community or nation but the world rather. Artists, singers, and performers
play a critical role in making effective and helpful music in society but turn out that
some music carries negative concepts and images to its listeners.

An outcry to music that exhibits rape culture and misogyny is alarming

particularly to children who unknowingly sing or jam to this music and to women
who are being degraded and exploited. It is difficult for our society to recognize it as
an issue when misogynistic music is normalized. In response to corporate pressures,
many rappers abandon political and social messages and focus instead on material
wealth and sexual exploits (Powell 2000).“music can be seen as part of a larger
ideological process of persuading the population that heterosexual male supremacy is
natural and normal”(p.6). The idea that such music has become a trend and the
industry ignores prohibiting misogynistic music just because it gains more popularity
is alarming. Most male artist write and sing such theme to assert dominance and
masculinity.Mark Anthony Neal, a hip-hop scholar, states “the industry thrives on
sexism, and asking artists to promote a feminist vision would be asking them to drop
their contracts and start selling fewer records” (Oikelome, 2013, p. 87),
Overt misogyny in rap music came to existence in the late 1980s and has then
been a feature of the music of various hip hop artists. It arose from western countries
and subsequently reached influence in the western and became one of the standard.
Recently, the song “Neneng B” by Nik Makino is receiving load of criticism from the
music’s lyric that depicts sexualization and objectifying women. Lyrical content of a
song is as equally important as the response to the song because the lyrics themselves
could directly or indirectly influence the response” (Rogers, 2013).

The portrayal of women that they are primarily valued for their sexuality and sex
appeal can be damaging to women self esteem and moral. This leads to where some
women adopts or readily accept objectification and inferiority. Surprisingly, some
women jams as well to this kind of music saying that ‘ its just an expression and just a
music, not much of a big deal’.

It is important to make own decisions based on how things make you feel and act.
Does listening to such music affects their emotion and morals? Is it really worth
listening to than any other kind of musics? Why does misogynistic song proliferate
than songs that empowers women? Does society really is retrogressing after all the
efforts in order to attain equality?
