Dear Madam

My area of interest for my senior project will be about how society treats people with
disabilities. I chose this topic because I used to teach at my local church and I worked a lot with
children who had mental and physical disabilities. I also take a college course on the Culture of
Disability, and the class has increased my awareness of the needs of others. I also suffer from a
disability myself and I know what it feels like. My topic is about how society has a major impact
on the quality of life a person with disabilities can have.

For my research project I will focus on how society views people with disabilities and
how it has an affect on the individuals. ​Society does not help people with disabilities be
independent, they just set limitations on them by not making every building handicap
accessible, not permitting the disabled to do certain jobs, and shunning them from the
community. ​Some subtopics that will be included in my project are laws in the US that are set
for people with disabilities, handicap accessibility, and the emotional impact society has on
people with disabilities. Some resources I will be using to gather information is books and
websites.

For my volunteer service I will be volunteering at my local church, working with

children. My volunteer work relates to my senior project because I will be monitoring the
behavior of children and how they treat one another. I will then be working with the children and
educating them on how to be caring of one another and basic understanding of disabilities. My
local church will be allowing me to do my services for free. I will do it on sundays after bible
study class.

I understand that plagiarism is when a person steals ideas or thoughts and claims them to
be theirs. It is important not to be tempted to do this because being caught has serious
consequences. A person could fail the whole Senior Project if they are caught stealing other
people’s ideas and not giving them recognition.
